What's New in Version 1.15 (May 17, 2002)

1. Added sorting capability to the photos table on the My photoSIG page and added the My Photos page for displaying photos that don't fit on the My photoSIG page.

2. Restricted unregistered users to the first page of each section of the Photos page. (You can register to see the rest of the photos.)

3. Added a hash code to the end of photo filenames to further reduce the ability of people to "reap" photos from the system.

4. Made the current message more obvious on the Read page.

5. Introduced a new article "unpublisher" script that converts unpopular articles back to private and emails the author tips for improvement.

6. Introduced a new script to clean up the user database.

What's New in Version 1.14 (May 11, 2002)

1. Added the ability for registered users to upload self-portraits.

2. Added the My Favorites section, complete with an Amazon catalog search.

3. Added the Users tab and consolidated under it the user, photographer, and author directories.

4. Changed the user, photographer, and author directories to alphabetize user names by row rather than column.

5. Added extensive new User pages that allow you to browse a user's photos, critiques, articles, forum messages, and favorites.

6. Reintroduced the My photoSIG tab.

7. Added more optimization and defered database updates. Note that these optimizations may produce seemingly odd effects, such as photos with total ratings that don't equal the sum of their individual ratings. Such anomalies will be short-lived and will work themselves out in short order.

8. Added the Links page.

9. Added the Chat page.

10. Changed the All Articles page to New Articles. (The articles list was getting too long.)

11. Converted the articles pages to two columns.

12. Made the left navigation bar narrower and changed the presentation of some of the text therein to better work with its new size. The purpose of this change was to leave more room on the right for actual content.

13. Changed the Neglected page to display photos that were submitted more than 48 hours ago but have fewer than three critiques.

14. Changed the Most Controversial and Least Controversial pages to include the number of critiques in the sort key. If two photos have the same range of opinion then the one with more critiques comes first.

15. Changed the critique scales. Now LCC critiques have a scale of three while the first three critiques written for a photo have a scale of two. Other critiques continue to have a scale of one.

16. Changed the Last Chance Critics page to only display critiques that actually were LCC critiques.

What's New in Version 1.13 (April 8, 2002)

1. Implemented automatic sign-in via the "Remember me" checkbox on the main page.

2. Introduced extensive database result caching. The speed of the system is for the most part limited by the database, so eliminating the need to execute multiple database queries to generate every single page makes things much faster.

3. Confirmation and error messages now appear in large green or red boxes at the top of the screen, aiding the identification of problems.

4. Added the Who's On screen.

5. Changed the Featured Photographer code to share the Featured Photographer among all user sessions and select a new one every hour.

6. Changed the main page to display the 15 highest-rated phtos from the last 24 hours in the Featured Photos section.

7. Lowered the submission limits to a maximum of three photos for users with a rating of 500 or more.

8. Fixed the width/height mix-up on the article resources page.

9. Lots and lots of internal changes, such as the complete reorganization of all the PHP include files, in order to prepare the system for growth.

What's New in Version 1.12b (March 14, 2002)

1. Fixed the view count on articles, although it's not displayed.

2. Added surveys.

3. Various bug fixes.

What's New in Version 1.12a (March 12, 2002)

1. New masthead with banner ad. You know you love banner ads, but just in case you don't, we're thinking about offering a no-ads membership plan.

2. New shortcut: Clicking the LCC icon next to your name (if you're a Last Chance Critic) will take you to your LCC Assignments page.

What's New in Version 1.12 (March 10, 2002)

1. The Articles section is now production-ready if not exactly beautiful. This part of the site will undergo quite a bit of change over the next month or two. If you have an idea for an article, there's no need to tell us about it. You can write it online.

2. We're beginning to run ads on the site. Unfortunately the current photoSIG layout is not well-suited for advertising; it seems that the ads are always a bit too large or much to small for the empty spots on the site. You'll see a lot of tweaking as we work out ways to fit them in. The ads are annoying, but photoSIG must start to make money if it's going to get much larger than it is.

3. Added a better pager to the Photos pages.

4. The Search page is now limited to returning 40 results. Before it would sometimes return half the database for common queries.

5. A few more bug fixes.

What's New in Version 1.11 (February 25, 2002)

1. Added the beta version of the Articles section.

2. Fixed miscellaneous bugs.

3. Limited the Forums display to 60 message threads to reduce the page loading time.

What's New in Version 1.10b (February 17, 2002)

1. Increased the number of critiques on the Last Chance Critics page from 30 to 60, as there are now 150 Last Chance Critics.

2. Fixed several linking bugs.

3. Added the "Assignment" field to the photo submission form and added a corresponding section to the Photos page.

4. Moved the LCC Assignments section to a separate page.

5. Added a column to the My photoSIG page to indicate when a photo was last critiqued.

What's New in Version 1.10a (February 12, 2002)

1. Increased the target number of critiques per photo from one to three. This means that you get 1.25 critic points per "useful" rating if you write one of the first three critiques, or 2 points if you write one of the first three critiques as the Last Chance Critic.  The system will assign a new LCC if the current LCC enters a critique and the photo still has fewer than three critiques.

2. Removed the "Optional" section from the LCC section of the My photoSIG page, since all of the photos on the system have been critiqued. Converted the LCC section to thumbnails.

What's New in Version 1.10 (February 9, 2002)

1. Merged the Photos and Browse pages.  The tree structure of the Browse page is gone; it was cool but ate up a lot of database cycles and bandwidth. You'll most likely find the new page easier to use.

2. In version 1.9, ratings without comments were called ratings, and ratings with comments were called critiques. That got to be confusing because of the numerous places in the system where both ratings and critiques are lumped under the heading "critiques."  In version 1.10, all critiques are critiques, and comments are simply called comments.

3. Deleting a photo now removes its effect on your photographer rating, so if you have a photo with a negative rating, you can remove it to improve your overall rating.

4. With 124 Last Chance Critics as of this writing, it became seriously impractical to print critiques from all of them on the Last Chance Critics page. Now the page just displays the last 30 critiques posted by Last Chance Critics, with a maximum of one per critic.

5. Rating a critique as "not useful" now reduces the writer's critic score.  However, you can't rate critiques that don't have comments, so even though critiques without comments are rarely "useful," they won't cause you to lose (or gain) critic points.

6. Added the Statistics page.

What's New in Version 1.9 (January 27, 2002)

1. Added the overlapping tab navigation.

2. photoSIG now displays a combined contributor score in the parentheses following a user's name.  Users can click on the combined score to see separate ratings in a popup window.

3. Expanded the My photoSIG section to include a summary page and a page that displays the user's critiques.

4. Introduced the Last Chance Critic feature.

5. Introduced a photo submission limit based on the user's combined contributor score.

6. Added a tutorial section to the Help page.

7. Added an option to the My Profile page to turn off reminder emails.

8. Added an option to the My Profile page to filter out photos below a certain rating.

9. Added a placeholder for the Articles section.

10. Introduced a differentiation between ratings, which have no comments, and critiques, which do. Ratings (without comments) can not be marked as useful or not useful.

11. Fixed a bug that caused an image to be saved to the database multiple times if the user pressed the Submit Changes more than once on the Submit page.

12. Modified the Browse page to only retrieve the information that it needs from the database instead of retrieving everything even if it's not being displayed.

13. Fixed a bug that caused the Register page to send email to a new user even when it failed to save the user information to the database.

14. Modified the code that displays user names and ratings to only display email addresses if the user is signed in.
