Gerald Weisfeld, founder of iconic fashion firm What Every Woman Wants, passed away at 79 on January 13.

The businessman battled a long-term illness but died on Monday morning surrounded by family.

What Every Woman Wants was founded in Glasgow in 1971 and Gerald grew the chain, alongside his wife Vera, to over 130 stores across the UK.

At its peak, the stores boasted a turnover of £100m as it continued to grow in 1989.

The pair sold the business in 1990 for £50m.

In November of last year the original building that housed the flagship store on Argyle Street was torn down.

Gerald spent the last few years of his life in Bothwell Castle Care, a care home in Lanarkshire.

The Daily Record reported that the family's spokesperson issued a statement: "They are requesting privacy at this time."
