Nancy Pelosi said that she is praying for President Trump and his family in the wake of a shooting spree at a congressional baseball practice that wounded Minority Whip Steve Scalise.

A gunman fired 50 or more shots at Republican congressmen practicing for a baseball game Wednesday morning, injuring Scalise, a Hill staffer, and two Capitol police officers. Only the shooter, thought to be a Bernie Sanders supporter, lost his life in a shootout with police.

"An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us," House Speaker Paul Ryan said in the House chamber, receiving multiple standing ovations for his message of unity after the tragedy.

"You're going to hear me say something you've never heard me say before. I identify myself with the remarks of the speaker," Pelosi said to Congress afterwards, calling Ryan's statements "beautiful."

"It's in the family," she stressed. "It's an injury in the family."

Pelosi said that in recent years, she has started praying for safety. She said she believes that she has been the target of more threats than anyone except for "maybe Barack Obama."

"I pray for Donald Trump that his presidency will be successful and that his family will be safe," she continued.

The minority leader smiled as she referenced her "special Italian-American connection" with Scalise, saying she told Ryan she would be asking him "every five minutes" about the congressman's condition.

She concluded that Scalise was "deeply in our prayers," and asked the Speaker of the House to convey her message to the wounded congressman.
