PHOTO: Suspect in Scalise Shooting Demonstrated With 'Tax the Rich' Sign

President Donald Trump spoke from the White House this morning following the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) at a congressional baseball practice. 

He announced that the gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson of Illinois, died of his injuries and applauded the heroic actions of Capitol Hill police officers to take down the attacker.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol police officers, who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault. Melania and I are grateful for the heroism and praying for the swift recovery of all victims. Congressman Scalise is a friend and a very good friend. He's a patriot and he's a fighter," said Trump.

The president said he, along with the entire nation and world, is praying for Scalise's full recovery. 

"We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace, and that we are strongest when we are unified, and when we work together for the common good," said Trump.
