Opinion Cases like Colten Boushie's are handled unjustly, and there's nothing wrong with saying that: Neil Macdonald
Had an all-Indigenous jury, selected under the supervision of an Indigenous judge, acquitted an Indigenous farmer of murdering a young white man, what would the reaction have been? That scenario is utterly unrealistic, but to ask the question is to answer it. More read comments

Opinion Selling OHIP+ was easy. Making it work has been much more difficult
by
Some of the requirements make no sense. To get OHIP+ coverage for Keppra, a favoured choice to treat epilepsy, for example, patients now have to have tried and failed older, cheaper anti-epilepsy drugs. That's just not practical for many children.

Opinion Raising the basic personal amount — not the minimum wage — is the way to help low-income workers
by
Lifting the basic personal amount would put more money in the hands of the working poor, help stimulate the economy and would also not have the effects on labour costs or small business profit margins that we see with steep minimum wage increases.

Opinion There's a pattern to credible #MeToo allegations. The one against Steve Paikin doesn't fit: Robyn Urback
by
Many people will take the case of TVO's Steve Paikin as evidence that #MeToo has gone off the rails: that a man can be destroyed by a single allegation. If anything, it shows the opposite: that evidence, corroboration and good judgment still matter.

Opinion Doug Ford's detractors would be foolish to count him out of the race for Ontario
by
There's huge appetite for major change in Ontario. And a Harvard-educated daughter of a former prime minister and a three-time PC leadership candidate and former MPP are not exactly anti-establishment choices.

Opinion Canadian politicians are fighting hard for free* trade: Neil Macdonald
by
If true free trade were the objective, Canada and the United States would simply open their markets to one another, and allow untrammelled — free — trade. But that would bring lobbyists racing to Ottawa (and to Washington), threatening massive job losses.

Opinion Eliminating criminal penalties for all drug use is a logical evolution of Canada's drug policy
by
Portugal recognized years ago that drastic measures were called for in order to combat its own drug crisis. By treating drug addiction as a medical issue, not a criminal one, the country saw considerable improvements in rates of addiction. Canada could learn a thing or two from them.

Opinion Canadians should be wary of loyalty programs — not enticed by them
by
The true value of any loyalty program lies in its ability to drive changes in consumer behaviour. Make no mistake, you are being programmed to shop, spend and redeem on the retailer's schedule.

Opinion There is no justification for leaving an animal tied up alone outside
by
Leaving a dog tied up unattended poses great risk to both dogs and public safety: dogs can become stressed, suffer in extreme temperatures and act out in aggressive ways.

Opinion We can still have electoral reform, as long as it's the Liberals' choice of electoral reform: Robyn Urback
by
The Liberals pledge openness but always with an asterisk. Everything is on the table except for the things the Liberals want off the table. So you can still have electoral reform, as long as it’s the Liberals’ preferred type of electoral reform.

Opinion Guess who will pay for Ottawa's infrastructure scheme... who else?: Neil Macdonald
by
Paying for hundreds of billions of new construction projects is just not politically feasible. It's much easier to bring in the private sector and let it finance the projects, and of course collect the price from Canadians separately.
