Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume said the attack on Republican members of Congress comes amid the "most poisonous political atmosphere" he has ever witnessed as a reporter going back nearly 50 years.
Hume recalled on "The Story" the year 1968, which saw two assassinations and riots in the streets and at the party's conventions.
But he said the hatred that exists between the left and the right following the election of President Trump is even worse.
"But the sheer loathing that people have for each other, [the loathing] that people who are in politics have for each other and for our president at this stage transcends even what we had then," he explained.
Hume said "politics excite passions" and it's not a "novel idea" that Americans and lawmakers should be civil toward each other.
Hume was reacting to Wednesday's shooting ambush in which Republican members of Congress were attacked at an early-morning baseball practice.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and remains in critical condition.
The shooter supported Bernie Sanders and posted numerous anti-GOP messages, including one that read "Trump is a traitor. Trump has destroyed our democracy. It's time to destroy Trump & Co."
