Introduction to InfoSource
Info Source: Sources of Federal Government and Employee Information provides information about the functions, programs, activities and related information holdings of government institutions subject to the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. It provides individuals and employees of the government (current and former) with relevant information to access personal information about themselves held by government institutions subject to the Privacy Act and to exercise their rights under the Privacy Act.
The Introduction and an index of institutions subject to the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act are available centrally.
The Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act assign overall responsibility to the President of Treasury Board (as the designated Minister) for the government-wide administration of the legislation.
Background
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio-Canada) was established in 1936, by the Broadcasting Act, to take over the broadcasting activities of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, Canada's first public broadcaster and regulator. It now operates under the Broadcasting Act of 1991, which sets out expectations for the Canadian broadcasting system and, within it, CBC/Radio-Canada. The Corporation reports annually to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage.
The Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors, which is composed of 12 members, including both the Chair and the President and CEO. The key responsibilities of the Board are to approve the strategic direction, corporate and business plans for the Corporation, to assess the Corporation's progress in achieving its strategic and business objectives, and to oversee the plans and policies in place to ensure effective communication with Parliament, the public and stakeholders.
As Canada's national public broadcaster, the Corporation's mandate is to inform, enlighten, and entertain; to contribute to the development of a shared national consciousness and identity; to reflect the regional and cultural diversity of Canada; and to contribute to the development of Canadian talent and culture. CBC/Radio-Canada is one of Canada's largest cultural institutions and its services are available across the country.
Responsibilities
Through the delivery of a comprehensive range of radio, television, internet, and satellite-based services, CBC-Radio/Canada is available how, where and when Canadians want it.
From coast-to-coast-to-coast, we bring diverse regional and cultural perspectives into the daily lives of Canadians in English, French and eight aboriginal languages. CBC/Radio-Canada also provides international reporting from a uniquely Canadian perspective, with foreign bureaus in places like Jerusalem, Washington and Beijing.
