Would you ever get intimate over the radio for cash? If you're on the fence the new performance from the Harbourfront Players might help you make a decision.

Bedtime Stories, a play written by Norm Foster, includes many stories, but one couples decision to be intimate over the airwaves permeates them all.

"It's Norm Foster at his best, terrifically clever and every once in awhile very tender," said director Marlane O'Brien.

O'Brien said the play is enhanced by the fact the couple aren't exhibitionist in nature.

"They're the most stayed, ordinary, middle aged sort of blue collar couple you've ever met," said O'Brien.

"They need the money, so they're doing it."

The players

The Harbourfront Players are largely amateur actors. Brian Matthie joined the group last year in a backstage role. This year he's acting in the production.

"I just thought it's time to do something different, and something I've always wanted to try and I'm having a blast," said Matthie.

This is also Arlene Giddings' second year involved with the group. She auditioned last year as a favour to her friend.

"A friend of mine had written the play last year so she had said, 'You're coming for the audition right?' So I just said, 'Yeah, okay,'" she said.

The stage

There are a few interesting stagecraft aspects to the play.

"The set remains the same, but the story actually encompasses six separate stories and all the characters are related in some way," said O'Brien.

The set is a bedroom and one piece of furniture is front and centre

"There is The Bed and a great deal of the story lines have to do with The Bed. It's a bit naughty," said O'Brien, adding the play is not suitable for children.

Bedtime Stories is playing May 12, 13, 14, 19 & 20 at the Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside, P.E.I.
