Training

Training manuals

Following is a descriptive list of the training offered by Cataloging Services.

Cataloging Training
Full cataloging training is restricted to staff hired specifically to perform copy/original cataloging functions in their positions. AACR2 will be studied. Online exercises during training will be input using WorkFlows. Training documentation is on the Web.

Connexion
Connexion Client training is provided to Cataloging faculty and staff. The Client is a tool used to create/manipulate records in OCLC's WorldCat to reflect Penn State's holdings.

FastCat
FastCat (i.e., Fast Cataloging) training is provided for Acquisitions staff and staff in other units who are able to catalog monographic items in the form of books and/or surrogates of books upon receipt. Limited, as opposed to full, cataloging training is provided. Items must have full copy available, either in The CAT or an external database such as OCLC's WorldCat, in order to qualify for FastCat processing.

Maintenance Training
The dispersed maintenance training material is used by library employees at Commonwealth Campus locations and University Park and includes basic editing information. The main object of the training is to learn to manipulate vol/copy records in WorkFlows to accurately reflect a particular library location's holdings, to add/correct barcodes, and to perform other simple maintenance activities.

Training Survey (Staff Only)
All trainees participating in any of the above training categories or in any other training provided by a Cataloging Services faculty or staff member are encouraged to take a few minutes to fill out and submit the online Cataloging Services Training Survey. Submissions are anonymous. Hard copies of the survey may be downloaded as a Word document from the Web version.
