A. General Information

An LCCN is a unique control number assigned to a bibliographic record by the Library of Congress. (See also BPCR 010.)

B. Processing Instructions

In general, accept copy.

Occasionally, a publisher uses an original CIP record for a subsequent edition; therefore, the same LC control number appears on both editions, usually on the t.p. verso. If the actual LC control number for the newer edition is present on copy, accept it, and input the 010 printed on the item in hand, which really belongs to a previous edition, in a |z subfield. If an invalid LC control number is the only control number present on an item, input it in a |z. No |a is necessary.

LCCNs should be input in The CAT with two preceding blank spaces and without the hyphen. Enter as many zeros as necessary in place of the hyphen to bring the digit count up to 8 (pre-2001) or 10 (2001 and later). Beginning in 2001, LCCNs incorporated all four digits of a year into the number.

Foreign Publisher Control Numbers

Foreign publisher control numbers will usually be preceded by a prefix such as cn, ce, or cf for Canadian numbers or gb for British numbers.

Accept copy. It is not necessary to delete foreign publisher 010s, but do not add if present on an item but not in copy.
