Demographic situation in 2015

As of 1 January 2016, the population of the Republic of Belarus was provisionally estimated at 9 498.7 thousand, showing an increase of 17 873 people compared with the beginning of 2015.

 

In 2015, 119 509 babies were born in the country, which is 975 babies more than in 2014. The city of Minsk and Minsk region were the leaders for the number of new-born babies (22 832 and 19 160 babies respectively).

 

The number of deaths was recorded at 120 130, which is 1 412 less compared with 2014 (-1.2%). The decrease in the number of deaths was observed practically in all regions of the country and in the capital city.

 

The natural decline in 2015 was 621 persons, having reduced 4.8 times (by 2 387people) compared with 2014.

 

In 2015 the migration gain was 18 494 persons, having increased by 2 772 persons compared with 2014 (1.2 times). The main migrational exchange of Belarus was recorded with the CIS countries. As many as 22 505 people arrived in Belarus from these countries last year, of which 19 985 people from Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan (88.8%).

 

In 2015, 82 030 were registered, of which 18 187 in Minsk city (22.2% of all marriages in the country) and 12 814 marriages in Gomel region (15.6%). As many as 32 984 families dissolved their marriage officially during this period.

 

Compared with 2014, the number of registered marriages decreased by 2.3%, of divorces by 5.4%.
