YPG advances near Turkey’s border

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkey’s semi-official Anadolu news agency reported that the People's Protection Units (YPG) were backed by Russian aircraft Saturday in an advance into the Azaz region of Syria near the Turkish border.

Russian warplanes have reportedly facilitated the advance of YPG fighters by carrying out three airstrikes against the road linking the district with the Bab al Salameh border checkpoint.

Anadolu also reported that last week Russian aircraft bombed opposition forces in eastern Syria’s Deir Cemal and Meryemeyn in an effort to open corridors for the YPG and Syrian Democratic Forces.

Turkey’s National Security Council in  October denounced a new self-proclaimed Kurdish enclave in Syria - Tal Abyad, or Gire Spi - and called on the international community to condemn the YPG as terrorists. Turkey has called the region of Tal Abyad “a campaign to change the demographic make-up of northern Syria."

Turkey’s council assembled after representatives of ethnic communities in the now Kurdish-controlled city of Tal Abyad met Wednesday to declare the region autonomous.

Control of the region is significant for the YPG because it links together many predominantly Kurdish villages in northern Syrian.

Turkey has warned the United States and Russia it will not tolerate any Kurdish region to be held by the PKK, which is deemed a terrorist group by NATO.

"This is clear cut for us and there is no joking about it," a Turkish official told Reuters in October.

Turkey fears advances by Kurdish forces on the Syrian side of its 900 km (560-mile) border will fuel separatist ambitions among Kurds in its own southeastern territories. But Washington has supported YPG fighters as an effective force in combating Islamic State, Reuters added.

This is the result of the new cold war, caused by the big mistake that Turkey made ,remember Saddam made only one big mistake, the invasion of Kuwait that changed the map of Iraq for ever ,lets hope the mistake made by Turkey will benefit the Kurds in the same way.Time is on our side ,all we need to do is , not to wast it...we need unity.

Erdogan keep in mind that world knows that you are supporting daesh -the biggest terrorist group in the world - and those who support terrorists are terrorists by themselves right. And whole world knows how you are breaking human rights of your own Kurds. Your worthless words don't mean anything. so leave kurds alone for once and for all.

I hope YPG and Kurds in general don't take orders from others and play a mercenary role in any game between the powers. If Russia really wants to help Kurds, let it first acknowledge Kurds are a nation and they deserve the rights of a nation in a statehood! Russia is looking for revenge after Turkey shot down its plane. We have been betrayed many times in these games before. Russia or NATO after all are traders and their interest comes first. They'll back Kurds until they get what they want from the regional enemies of Kurds, and then stab Kurds in the back as they always did

Turkey thought that they can hide behind NATO ,even if on the surface NATO do not admit that Turkey was wrong, and they do not admit that Turkey miscalculate the situation , but in privet they do tell each other in a hushed tone that Turkey is causing too much damages for NATO,and they express their discontent.remember that NATO know that Turkey is helping Isis ,they know that Turkey is killing journalists who dare to enlighten people about Turkey s help to Isis.

@Francis, GR: Tell it to the Peshmerga they trained and the KRG government who invited them. Idiotic obsessions have no place in politics.
