Oregon Symphony to release new CD featuring music by English composers

by on October 2, 2012

The Oregon Symphony has announced that it will be releasing a new CD of music by Elgar, Britten, and Vaughan Williams in November on the PentaTone label. This will be the second recording that the orchestra has released with its Music Director Carlos Kalmar at the helm.

Here are the details from the orchestra’s press release:

The Oregon Symphony today announced that its upcoming CD—the second under the baton of Music Director Carlos Kalmar—is set to be released on the PentaTone label on November 13.

This latest CD, entitled This England, follows last year’s release, Music for a Time of War, a recording of the program performed at the Symphony’s 2011 Carnegie Hall debut which hit the classical billboard charts and received numerous critical accolades. Also like its predecessor, This England was recorded in hybrid multichannel Super Audio CD format.

The CD features works by Edward Elgar (Cockaigne, In London Town), Ralph Vaughan Williams (Symphony No. 5 in D major) and Benjamin Britten (“Four Sea Interludes” and “Passacaglia” from Peter Grimes). These works were recorded live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on February 18 and 19, 2012 and on May 12, 13, and 14, 2012.

Music Director Carlos Kalmar couldn’t help but note the ironic quality of this CD: “It’s kind of crazy! You have a Uruguayan–born, Austrian conductor of an American orchestra performing an all-British program. But when you listen to this CD you’ll understand why we are so proud of it.”

Following its release, This England will be available for purchase at most music outlets as well as at the Oregon Symphony Ticket Office (923 SW Washington).

The Oregon Symphony appreciates the generosity of the many donors who support our recording and broadcast efforts, especially Mary Ausplund Tooze, Evona Brim, Richard Louis Brown, Elaine Calder & William Bennett, the Cascadia Foundation, Cecil & Sally Drinkward, the Holzman Foundation/Renée & Irwin Holzman, Martha Warrington, and several donors who wish to remain anonymous.

THIS ENGLAND

Elgar: Cockaigne (In London Town), Opus 40
Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 5 in D major, Opus 33a and 33b
Britten: “Four Sea Interludes” and “Passacaglia” from Peter Grimes

Recorded live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on February 18 and 19, 2012 and on May 12, 13, and 14, 2012.
