Calm streets, busy markets and pictures of people going about their normal everyday activities. That is the image of Homs being portrayed through stories on Syrian state television, but if you listen closely, it is possible to hear the faint sound of gunfire and explosions in the background.

Those noises are not from a city besieged and under attack from government forces, but from the security forces fighting terrorists and armed gangs – as requested by people living in Homs – according to the reporting of this news programme.

The Syrian authorities are keen to put across a different story to combat the amateur footage flooding international news outlets – using state television to do the job.
