We applaud the New York City Council’s decision to override Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto of the Community Safety Act, two related bills which seek to end the era of stop-and-frisk by creating an independent inspector general to review NYPD policies and making it easier for New Yorkers to sue for racial profiling. In the days leading up to the vote, The Nation joined the many grassroots and civil rights organizations fighting for reform with an open letter to the Council calling for the law's passage. Over 150 of our readers signed on, with many adding their own comments. Reader Bridget Davis echoed many New Yorkers’ sentiments, writing "my 13-year-old son should not have to learn the 'rules of conduct' for inevitable stop-and-frisks simply because of the color of his skin."
