This photo feature takes a glimpse at the STROKE in Munich 2013.

Since its initiation in 2009, the German STROKE Urban Art Fairhas developed into a key event for everyone interested in young, modern art. It is held twice each year with artists from all over the world showcasing their work in Munich in the spring, and in Berlin in autumn. Overall, 30 galleries and artists from all over the world will be exhibiting their work until May 5 on Munich’s Praterinsel.

The STROKE makes art accessible for everyone by doing things differently and creating an atmosphere that is more relaxed than most other art events. More importantly, the exhibition is not only a place to look at art but to experience it. Most of the artists are present at the events, and people get a chance to meet and talk to them instead of just looking at their work. Daily live paintings take place, allowing visitors to see the whole process, from the first dots of paint to the finished artwork.  In the evening there are concerts and parties.

STROKE shows how diverse urban art can be and how it has developed over time. Although it is still connected to its street art roots, the term has evolved greatly and now encompasses a variety of styles. From classical graffiti to tape art and sculptures, STROKE exhibits all kinds of art inspired by urban culture and lifestyle.

Artists present this year include Bert Löschner, who uses cheap white plastic chairs as a raw material for his sculptures, and British Grafitti artist FinDac who created the key visual for this year’s STROKE. Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk exhibit their Coarse toysdark Asian sculptures, which are available in life and toy size, and the Mexican artist Curiotbrought some of his colorful paintings to Bavaria.

This photo feature gives a glimpse of the STROKE in Munich 2013 which is definitely worth a visit. For anyone not able to attend the STROKE, keep an eye on the upcoming dates for Berlin’s STROKE in autumn.
