Pele Supports peaceful protests in Brazil

Soccer great Pele says he supports the Brazilian protests sweeping the country as long as they're peaceful.

Pele has being criticized online for telling Brazilians to forget about the protests and focus on cheering on the national team in the upcoming Confederation Cup.

Pele said in a television interview the country should only "think about the national team," prompting Brazilians to flood social media sites to mock his comments.

Pele's '100 best' soccer stars

Seven England stars have been named by Pele in his list of the 100 greatest living footballers in the world.

Modern heroes like David Beckham, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen are preferred to Sir Geoff Hurst, the man whose hat-trick against West Germany ensured England's World Cup triumph.

They join former stars Gary Lineker, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks as "the best, most outstanding, creative players of their generation".

More than 20 of those in the list, revealed by world governing body Fifa today, have played or are playing in the Premiership.

Four Arsenal stars, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira are named, as are three of Chelsea's foreign brigade in Hernan Crespo, Juan Sebastian Veron and Marcel Desailly.

Pele: I have edge over Messi

Brazil legend Pele has praised Barcelona star Lionel Messi, but noted that the 24-year-old still has a long way to catch the football legend.

Argentina international Messi became the second player in the history of the Ballon d'Or to win the prestigious award three times in a row when he lifted the title earlier this month in Zurich.

Pele acknowledged that he is a fan of Messi, but stressed that the diminutive attacker faces a hard task to equal him.

Pele named NOC's Top Athlete

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- The world's National Olympics Committees have voted Brazilian soccer star Pele as No. 1 in their top five Athletes of the Century even though he's the only one of the five who didn't take part in the Olympics.

Behind Pele come Muhammad Ali, who won the Olympic light-heavyweight boxing title in 1960 before becoming a heavyweight megastar as a pro, Carl Lewis, who won nine athletics gold medals in four Games between 1984-96, basketball star Michael Jordan, who was among the United States "Dream Team" gold medalists in '92, and Mark Spitz, who won seven swimming titles at the '72 Games at Munich.

The NOCs also listed their top five leaders in sport with Baron Pierre de Coubertin, architect of the modern Olympics and International Olympic Committee president from 1896-1925, as No. 1 ahead of current IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, who has held the position since 1980.

Former FIFA president Joao Havelange was third ahead of Primo Nebiolo, who was president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation for 18 years until his death last month, and Avery Brundage, IOC president from 1952-72.
