Quakes Advance in Open Cup

The San Jose Earthquakes pulled out a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over the Portland Timbers Tuesday night at JELD-WEN Field in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-in match. Ike Opara netted the winning goal in the final minute of overtime, heading home a cross from Sam Cronin. Andrew Weber made three saves, including a couple of big ones early in the match, to earn the shutout in his first appearance of the season.

The win marks the Quakes first-ever victory in a U.S. Open Cup Play-in game. San Jose moves on to play the Chicago Fire in another Open Cup Play-in match. A win against the Fire would put the Quakes into the main draw of the Open Cup. The site and date of the game against the Fire will be announced at a later date.

The Quakes take this weekend off before heading to Vancouver to face Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, May 11 at Empire Field at 7 p.m. PT.

Copa Libertadores: Draw sends Santos through

Santos made sure of their place in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals with a goalless draw against America.

Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg of their last-16 tie, Santos managed to hold off the threat of their Mexican hosts thanks to a combination of good fortune and an impressive performance from goalkeeper Rafael.

Angel Reyna saw a long-distance effort palmed away by Rafael in the first half, while a header from Aquivaldo Mosquera came back off the post.
