Monthly Soccer Conditioning Tips

Adjustments in Resistance Training Variables for the Year Round Club Player

Michael Rose, MS, CSCS

Players, who are members of a youth club team, are usually active in games and practices during most of the year(10-12 months). For these players, there is not a regular extended off-season, which would enable them to focus solely on a resistance training program to improve strength. Players, who are active playing with their club most of the year, need to implement a resistance training program that will improve strength(especially lower body) while not leaving their legs too fatigued to practice and play well in scheduled games.

Luis Suarez stresses he's staying

Luis Suarez has again reiterated that he is staying at Liverpool, saying there is nothing to reports he might leave Anfield before the summer's transfer window shuts.

Stories in the UK and Spain had suggested that Real Madrid might make a last-gasp bid to take Suarez to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, while Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid were also all linked with moves amid frantic deadline day speculation.

The man himself told reporters on landing in South America ahead of his country's upcoming World Cup 2014 qualifiers away in Peru and at home to Colombia that there was nothing to these stories about a potential last minute move.

Ozil eyes trophies with Arsenal

Mesut Ozil is confident he can fit right into the heartbeat of the Arsenal side and help end their quest for a first trophy in almost a decade.

The 24-year-old Germany international completed a club-record transfer from Real Madrid late on deadline day for a fee believed to be £43million as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger finally delivered a marquee signing.

The departure of the third-generation Turkish-German playmaker was greeted with shock by some of his former team-mates, so highly is the player rated among his peers.

Ozil made his mind up to leave after being told he no longer figured in the first-team plans of Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti following the world-record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham.

NBCSN delivers most expansive Premier League coverage in American history

How many producers does it take to get a starting lineup right?

What position does Glen Johnson play? What is Steven Gerrard's uniform number?

It was a frenetic race against time for the handful of NBC producers making sure Liverpool's starting formation was correct prior to airing it live across the country. The time was 7:30 a.m. last Saturday, it was NBC Sports Network's (NBCSN) inaugural broadcast of studio show Premier League Live and kickoff of the weekend's first fixture -- the opening match of England's Barclays Premier League season between Liverpool and Stoke City -- was minutes away from kickoff.

The lineup had to be right. Fingers pointed at screens, exasperated voices rose and fell, people ran back and forth to double check numbers and positions on the graphic. Finally, just in time, they got it right.

Kaka revels in AC Milan return

Kaka may have returned to AC Milan four years older and wiser, but he believes he still has a lot to learn from the next generation of Rossoneri stars.

The Brazilian forward is finally back at San Siro after four largely disappointing years with Real Madrid, where he was ultimately unable to make the most of a 70million euro (59million pound) move.

Despite forming part of Jose Mourinho's Primera Division-winning side last year, Kaka made fewer than 100 league appearances for the capital club and, after announcing his decision to leave Spain last week, he arrived in Milan on a free transfer on Monday.

Kaka, now 31, remains a folk hero among Rossoneri fans and players alike, having been the prodigious focal point of a Scudetto win in 2004 before firing Milan towards the Champions League trophy in 2007.

Bale's seismic move, Sturridge on form, Bonucci shines, more

OK, so it's done. Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid player. Bet you didn't see that one coming, eh?

This has been percolating for so long, there were only a few things left to sort out. The first was the fee. According to Real, it's $120 million, but talk to Tottenham and it's $132 million.

Why the discrepancy? Well, there's a micro answer and a macro one. The micro theory is that Real are going with the lower amount because it's equivalent to 91 million euros, which is less than what the club paid for Cristiano Ronaldo back in the summer of 2009. And, supposedly, Cristiano is so sensitive that nobody wants to upset him. Boy, would he be upset if he wasn't the most expensive player at this club.

Landon Donovan returns to World Cup qualifying looking to lead U.S. to berth in Brazil

A few months back, soccer, let alone the World Cup, was the furthest thing from Landon Donovan's mind. Yet as the prodigal son of the United States men's national team prepares for his first appearance in the final round of qualifying for Brazil 2014, he does so with the ultimate prize firmly in sight.

"I can envision scarves around our neck, American flags, the crowd going crazy and everybody celebrating together," Donovan said this week.

He was talking about the scene he and his colleagues hope to experience at Columbus' Crew Stadium next Tuesday night, a scenario whereby the team would have clinched its spot in the World Cup next summer with two games to spare.

Such an outcome would likely require back-to-back victories - first at Costa Rica on Friday and then against Mexico in Ohio - and the most notable thing about the comment was not Donovan's confident tone but his focus on the future.

Riddled with injuries, England faces two decisive World Cup qualifiers

Sunday was a grim day for Roy Hodgson. It started badly as the England manager was denied a seat in the directors box at Anfield, seemingly because there were too many sponsors who had to be accommodated. Hodgson initially had to take his place in a section of seats usually reserved for scouts. The day got worse as confirmation came that Wayne Rooney will miss the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with a head injury, and it deteriorated further as Phil Jones and Glen Johnson were forced out of Liverpool's win over Manchester United with injuries, Daniel Sturridge suffered a groin strain and Jack Wilshere, battling stomach cramps, had to come off before halftime in Arsenal's victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

As the dust settles, it seems Wilshere will recover in time to take his place in the England squad, while Sturridge's involvement remains unclear. He had a groin problem before kickoff but played on and, while he seemed confident he would be available, his club manager Brendan Rodgers was more cautious, saying that the injury would need to be assessed.
