I redid the skins for the marines/menus to also get a darker, washed out and more realistic look, still this is not looking as movie-realistic as with my edited Projam skins (as seen in the screenshots below), but it makes it possible for me to release this to the public! I did this also as an example that some respect for the wishes of mod-creators should be shown. We all get these skins/maps/models/etc. for free and should respect the restrictions that come with them. No matter if this is Projam, KingKenny, Yaji or anyone else. To respect other people's work is the only way to keep the community working.

I encourage everyone who wants to use modified/enhanced Projam skins to just tr y and get it done in any graphics application or do completely new skins for the marines or any other object in the game.[/b]

REMAINING QUESTIONS:

I also redid textures for Windebiestes Skirmish pack as well as Under the Hunter's Moon and Temple of the Worm, also [DnD] Hive SP and made all these compatible with each other (including combining strings in the cres.dll, all working fine). Shall I release this "Addon" as well? I currently didn't ask Windebieste and DnD for permission so that has to be done as well. If any of you reads this - I am asking now happy

All stuff I did, is of course freely available to everyone for further modification. Feel free to take it apart, use textures from it in your mod or the modified dll - just CREDIT me with "dex909" in your readme or whatever and you can include any of my work in your mods. I am not responsible for any stupid/senseless/cheat/garbage mods anyone creates using this, though. If you want to use the modified high res weapon skins you will still have to ask Yaji. Have fun! wink

Following is the original thread:
Since I got some very useful help and kind advice here from these forums, I will post some pictures from the modification I am working on.

This mod is a graphical enhancement to the game in the way it should actually look like (my opinion of course). More movielike, less comic. Basically I wanted to change the overall looks and feel of the game to be more realistic, dark and detailed. This is a step away from the colourful comic-look and changes various things. All flags for every modified dtx texture have been checked, compared with each original dxt and set by hand in Dedit as there is no other way to retain the original settings for fullbright, sounds on impact or each detailtexture right. No bugs with textures so far.

I combined some textures from Yaji's High Resolution Weapons and his higher resolution Aliens as well as several graphics and sounds from AJL and did a full overhaul. I did not simply copy and paste them, though. All of Yaji's skins as well as the original game's worldtextures, skins, characters etc. have been reworked to make them look less "saturated" and less "comiclike". I used a "fake" bumpmapping effect over every texture to gain a bit more depth and basically make it appear more realistic. I did not change any things that were perfect in first place, or game mechanics like weaponstats etc. are all original. The motion tracker from AJL has been tweaked a bit (rotation was a bit rough), the HUD colours for human weapons (ammon counter digits) and the Predator energy display were changed to red to make it a bit more movielike. I tweaked some inventory-graphics from the predator to match the new (darker) weapon skins and altered some menu-graphics slightly. The saturation of the marine weapon in the loading screen has been slightly altered to look more realistic and the marine menu skin is now darker. Everything is true to the original "Aliens" and "Predator" universe. Even more movielike were the Projam skins which I also "de-comic-a-lized" but only included in my PRIVATE version of the mod, those skins are not going to be released to the public due to Projam copyrights, sorry (takes a lot of the realism away though, if they ever change their policy I'd be happy to include these).

I also edited the cshell.dll to make the colour of the light the shoulder lamp casts white/blue instead of yellow and give all the Predator vision modes a slight distortion as seen in the movies. Several attribute files have been changed to alter various things like: changing the colour and font of subtitles to appear more movie/dvd like as well as changing the colours from the ammo counter in the marine hud to red (and only the ammo counters). This change comes in a separate .rez so you can choose if you want to use it or not (or to prevent compatibility problems when playing online).

Many changes are subtle and it would take too long to explain and count everythig I did. I am finally happy with this game, as in my opinion it's now looking the way it should. But as with all texture mods, this is a matter of personal preference and taste.

As you can see the changes are subtle but effective in breaking away from the original comic style.

Notice the motion tracker is a fixed version from the AJL tracker. The rotation of the movielike AJL tracker was a bit rough so I just redid the circle graphics.

Cool stuff. This mod is more of a preference type of mod. Some might prefer the gritty look, some might not.

I still prefer the original look, but I'd probably give this a go.

I'd have to agree with King Kenny on this one. Although it looks better in someareas than it does in others. I like the signs grin

This must have taken you ages to make. Have you done all the textures?

@B1KingKenny: Exactly. That's what I guess most people would think about it!

@WsCandy1: Yes it actually took ages confused and all textures have been remade. Only a few are untouched. I left the envmaps in original for example. I also changed the "net" overlay pcx for the Predator net to match the realism style. All those details took quite a bit to make but I am happy with the result and yes it is definitely a matter of taste (especially because I took away contrast and saturatio´n a bit to make textures look a bit like created from actual photos instead of drawn comic images).

Also if Projam didn't make the new skins for the marines and Yaji the new weapon textures, I would have needed to do them myself as well as some textures needed to be redrawn completely. These are great skins and really enhance the graphics. The suits of the marines for example now fit directly to the Aliens (movie-) universe, but I choose to not include the movie-heads and names from "Aliens" for Frosty's crew to keep the game as original as possible.

Oh I also had some good fun while doing this! I love the little details AvP2 includes, like the stars in the titlescreen blinking effect made with sprites! I also resized them to be a bit smaller and made my new title-background's stars fit with the position of the sprites, now the background looks really good and the few stars in the picture are still animated! happy But it is only barely visible on those screenshots. Most people add a new background and just disable the starsprites by replacing them.

So, are you using Projams work and Yaji's in this mod? and do you got permission? and you gonna make new skins?


screens look alright, But it isnt striking enough for my taste :-)

There are textures/skins from both, Yaji's and Projam's mods in it. This mod will not be released to the public so I did not ask for any permissions yet. Are Yaji and/or people from Projam active on these forums?

You can use my weapons skins until its not a public mod, but if you want share your mod with rest od the world, just write in the credits that you used my skins :P Link to the skin pack would be nice to ^^

Oh, and I got some advice, try to remake envmaps to :P Original ones are gray and boring.

btw. why my name was changed to WSH303 ?

If I would make it public, I would include the readme for each original mod from Projam and Yaji and name both in the credits and from start I always said that I included work from both! Thanks Yaji for letting me add your textures and post shots of it! wink I will try to ask Projam about permission on posting screens of their work. If someone connected to Projam reads this - I hope all this is no problem for you! I will write a mail too.

Projam won't let you use their skins no if ands or but, I asked before and they said no, followded by a wide variety of cuss words, their website even says no somewhere. Ah Here it is:

When I asked them I got cussed out something else, in my opinion they are all stuck up aholes who don't know what the true spirit of modding is.

Example from their FAQ:
"Q. Can I use your skins/sounds/effects in my mod?
A. (insert favorite swear word) NO!!!! PROJAM content is exclusive to PROJAM Productions© projects. The only person who can technically use our content is Monolith given that we (like every mod team) are bound by the user agreement in the AvP2 tools...but we would hope they would at least bring us on board for any project in which they thought our content was good enough to appropriate. - Phil"

So there is the answer to if you can use their skins, no. But personally seeing is how they are such high and mighty jerks I'd suggest using their skins and editing them a bit so its no longer techinally completely theirs and tell them to go to hell but then again I was cussed out by them so I am overly bias.
Why isn't this a public release? The public could use something like this.

Yea so to release it, you should alter it due to Projam's files.

No point in working on a mod and previewing it to the public, THEN asking for permission to include files from other authors after you already put them in. Thats a waste of time.

Ask first, then use what you can.

I'm glad I chose to make this for private use only in first place wink Of course I won't release anything without proper allowance from Projam, so this is bound to stay private. I guess they won't be happy that I included their textures and also made them appear less "saturated" wink

I'd like to make some minor adjustments to part of the textures, does anyone know if there is a way to change them without losing all the flag settings for each dtx file?
