Existing Pape Station Entrance and Bus Terminal

The south side roadway for Pape Station will be permanently closed to bus operation as part of the overall station revitalization and elevator projects scheduled over the next several years.

As a result of this roadway closure, all bus routes at this station will load on the north side of the bus platform. A pedestrian walkway will be maintained from the station to the bus platform area located north of the main station building.

Pape Station Modernization Project

Pape Station - Facts

The Bloor-Danforth Subway was opened in 1966. After over 40 years, these stations are showing signs of wear and age with most stations still having their original wall, floor, and ceiling finishes and signage.

The purpose of the Bloor-Danforth Subway Station Modernization Program is to:

  • Upgrade and modernize station finishes, including an integrated art component;
  • Enhance the street presence of station entrances; and,
  • Improve passenger flow and wayfinding within all station levels.

What will be Done to “Modernize” Stations?

For each station in the Modernization Program, the following will be undertaken:

  • Improvements to finishes including walls, floors, and ceilings;
  • Brighter lighting;
  • Improved station identification and wayfinding signs;
  • Public art integrated into finishes; and
  • Improved streetscaping and landscaping.

At some stations, modernization initiatives are being combined with other TTC programs, such as Easier Access (new elevators and barrier-free access) and Second Exit (new exits in stations with only one egress route). The benefits of this approach are:

  • More efficient use of limited funds;
  • Consistent and integrated design statement for all new station elements; and
  • Shorter period of construction disruption than if the work is done as separate projects.

Pape Station - The First Modernization Project

Pape Station was selected as the first Modernization project because of its state of repair and because work was planned at the station under other TTC programs. In addition to “Modernization”, the following programs will be implemented as part of the same construction project:

  • Easier access, including new elevators to provide barrier free access throughout the station.
  • Second exit, including new exit routes from subway platforms to street to speed up exiting.
  • Fire alarm and lighting upgrades to meet current standards.
  • Roofing replacement, at main entrance and bus platform.

What are the Benefits?

The project will result in the following benefits for passengers using Pape Station:

  • Enhanced overall station appearance (streetscaping, station finishes, lighting, furniture, and signs).
  • Improved passenger circulation and comfort (new waiting area and larger concourse area);
  • Faster exiting from station (new second exit);
  • Full station accessibility (new elevators, sliding doors, and barrier-free turnstile); and,
  • Improved passenger safety (additional lighting and fire alarm systems).

The City of Toronto and the TTC are coordinating to design and construct a secure bicycle parking facility at the station. This facility will be operated by the City of Toronto and provide secure, sheltered bicycle parking for a small fee.

Current Status

Construction commenced in Fall 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2013.
