Bilateral Minerals and Energy Cooperation with Mongolia

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mongolia and Australia on mining and energy cooperation was signed at the first meeting of the Australia-Mongolia Joint Working Group on Mining and Energy Cooperation (Ulaanbatar, Mongolia - 3 August 2007).

The 2nd meeting of the Australia-Mongolia Joint Working Group on Energy and Minerals (JWGEM) was held in Canberra on 9 September 2009. The meeting provided an opportunity for delegates to foster cooperation between both governments in the minerals and energy industries; promote improved trade, investment and sustainable development; and to undertake mutually determined activities including the exchange of information on topics of mutual interest. The consultations centred around four key themes:

  • Mining legislation (approvals processes, mine safety and environment)
  • Policy Cooperation and Frameworks in Mongolia
  • Resources supply and demand in Mongolia and Australia (coal, copper and uranium)
  • Mining sector investment environment (foreign investment regime)

Both Australia and Mongolia agreed to continue strengthening our bilateral relations, through collaborative opportunities to exchanges further information, for example legislative frameworks (including foreign acquisition laws) and sustainable mining policies and programs.
