Source

Multiple potential source facies for oil and gas:

  • Middle-Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous lacustrine shale and coal;
  • Early Cretaceous marginal marine to coastal plain mudstone and coal;
  • Albian-Cenomanian and Turonian-Santonian marine shale (oil-prone);
  • Cenomanian deltaic and shallow marine shale and coal;
  • Latest Santonian-Maastrichtian prodelta shale.
Reservoir
  • Cenomanian and Late Santonian-Maastrichtian deltaic sandstone;
  • Turonian-Santonian shallow marine facies.
Seal
  • Blue Whale Supersequence likely to form regional seal for Early Cretaceous reservoirs in the inboard part of the basin;
  • Tiger Supersequence marine shale likely to form excellent regional seal for White Pointer and Tiger reservoir rocks;
  • Seals within the Hammerhead Supersequence mostly intraformational. More widespread transgressive marine shales within the shallow marine to nearshore facies also likely. Outer shelf to slope downlapping marine shales in the central to outer basin best potential seals within Hammerhead Supersequence.
Traps

Wide range of possible plays at various stratigraphic levels. Main plays associated with faults in the post-Albian section, and include both hanging wall and footwall traps with either rollovers or dip closures. Inboard Gnarlyknots Trend consists of fault related traps with targets in Cenomanian to Santonian reservoirs (White Pointer and Tiger supersequences), charged laterally and vertically from Turonian to Santonian (Tiger Supersequence) source rocks. Outer Springboard Trend characterised by fault related traps with targets in Campanian deltaic reservoirs (Hammerhead Supersequence), charged by either marine shale of the Tiger Supersequence or prodeltaic shale of the basal Hammerhead Supersequence

Infrastructure and Markets

No infrastructure exists for this offshore frontier area, but access to a growing energy market in SE Australia can be established.

Graticular Block Map

Graticular Block Map - Ceduna Sub-basin
For convenience, geographical coordinates shown on this map are expressed in terms of the Geocentric Datum or Australia 1994 (GDA94). Permit areas are defined by the 5 minute graticular block system set out under Section 16 of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006; under Sections 20, 21 and 21A of the Act, the position of those blocks is determined by reference to the Australian Geodetic Datum (AGD66).
