Resources

The Australian Government is committed to creating a policy framework to expand Australia's resource base, increase the international competitiveness of our resources sector and improve the regulatory regime, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
Other Digital Data

AMSIS

The Australian Marine Spatial Information System (AMSIS) is an on-line mapping and decision support tool that presents a vast array of Commonwealth interests in Australia's marine jurisdiction. With the cooperation of other Government and private sector agencies, this system integrates administrative boundary information including petroleum leases with scientific data against other background data such as bathymetry and maritime boundaries.

AMSIS is easy to use and provides access to data via a web browser for those interested the marine environment without the need for specialised software or mapping skills. AMSIS not only displays 'what's out there', but also allows users to query the information, view metadata, and conduct more advanced functions such as return the nearest distance from a point to a nominated boundary. AMSIS can be found on the web at: www.ga.gov.au/amsis/index.jsp

Australian Geological Provinces Database

The Australian Geological Provinces Database provides interpretive data on Australia's sedimentary, igneous, metallogenic, structural and metamorphic provinces. The database has been jointly developed and populated by the Onshore Energy and Minerals Division of Geoscience Australia, which is concentrating on onshore geological provinces, and the Petroleum and Marine Division, which is capturing data for offshore sedimentary basins. The database provides the mapped extent of Australia's geological provinces, and includes attributes such as size, water depth, tectonic setting, age, sediment thickness, main rock types, depositional environments, main resources, key references, and relations to other geological provinces. It also includes an overview of the geology, exploration status, and petroleum system elements of each province.

The Australian Geological Provinces Database is available online. Access to the database is provided through the Geoscience Australia website using an interactive mapping system, at www.ga.gov.au/provexplorer

The interface allows users to view and select provinces of interest based on their key attributes, and to add key map layers (exploration data, surface geology, images, bathymetry). Database extracts are provided as an HTML report, and include links to key images (structural element maps, regional cross-sections, stratigraphic and petroleum system charts).

This database interface provides explorers with basic geological information on all offshore sedimentary basins, and many of their component sub-basins, along Australia's continental margin.

National Petroleum Wells Database

Geoscience Australia's geological databases provide detailed publically available "open file" header data, biostratigraphic data, organic geochemical data, reservoir and facies data, interpreted depositional environment information and directional survey data. These data have been extracted from open file Well Completion Reports or are the results from other studies. These data can be accessed via the following paths:

Please contact sales@ga.gov.au with any technical problems using the web pages listed above. For technical information on these data contact David Rowland, Petroleum Database Manager, phone +61 (0)2 62499111, e-mail David.Rowland@ga.gov.au

Virtual Data Room (Prototype)

Geoscience Australia intends to demonstrate its prototype data discovery tool (Virtual Data Room) at the APPEA 2009 conference. The demonstration will show the direction Geoscience Australia is taking in assisting petroleum industry explorers discover and deliver essential data sets. Geoscience Australia is interested in industry feedback on the tool from those attending the conference. This feedback will be used to inform any further development.

The Virtual Data Room prototype tool is intended to provide a means for industry and others to search, discovery, and retrieve petroleum geoscientific information from Geoscience Australia through a single point, independent of the type of technical information being sought. This web based tool will allow spatial and textual searches, the visualisation of the selected material and the requesting for download/dispatch of discovered information.
