Waste transport

About the transport of waste in Australia

Radioactive materials are safely transported around Australia and the world every day, with more than 30,000 packages transported annually in Australia.

Over the past 40 years there has not been a transport incident in Australia that resulted in a significant radiological release harmful to the environment and public health.

The transport of radioactive material in Australia, including radioactive waste, is governed by the Code of Practice for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, published by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

The code of practice is based on internationally accepted standards published by the International Atomic Energy Agency and ensures that waste is packaged and transported commensurate with its potential hazard to people and the environment.
