Coal Seam Gas Water Management Study

The key objectives of the Regional Minerals Program (RMP) project titled Coal Seam Gas (CSG) Water Management Study were:

  • identify the likely hydrogeological effects of water extraction on Surat Basin aquifers (coal and other) that are currently being assessed
  • identify, evaluate and cost technical options to manage water co-produced by coal seam gas operations in the Surat Basin, Queensland
  • enable regulators to disseminate information to the community to increase awareness of the potential impacts (if any) ofwater extraction by the CSG industry. It also identified and quantified the hydrological impacts of large volume water extraction on Surat Basin aquifers.

The study provided a number of water management and treatment options for CSG water produced.

The study was completed in September 2004.
