Bilateral Minerals and Energy Cooperation with the Philippines

The Australia-Philippines Joint Working Group on Energy was established in 1994. Meetings have discussed a number of issues including:

  • world and regional energy review and outlook
  • Philippine and Australian domestic energy policy developments
  • coal infrastructure and mine safety
  • the role of the Philippine Government in coal contracts and coal infrastructure developments.

While not a major export market for Australia, the consultations have provided a useful forum for promoting bilateral cooperation, especially in the area of energy market reform.

Major Australian exports to the Philippines in energy and minerals in 2007 and 08 included copper ore ($A159 million) and crude petroleum ($A195 million).

The most recent meeting was held in Manila in June 1999.
