Resources

The Australian Government is committed to creating a policy framework to expand Australia's resource base, increase the international competitiveness of our resources sector and improve the regulatory regime, consistent with the principles of environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
United States

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has in place a number of programs/initiatives that relate to CCS. They are:

  • Fossil Energy - Carbon Sequestration
  • Office of Science - Carbon Sequestration
  • Fossil Energy - Carbon Sequestration Regional Partnerships - The DOE’s Carbon Sequestration Regional Partnership Program began in 2003 and is a nationwide network of federal, state, and private sector partnerships that have the goal of determining the most suitable technologies, regulations, and infrastructure for future carbon capture, storage and sequestration in different areas of the US. There are currently seven regional partnerships established to study carbon sequestration as one option for mitigating climate change. Together, the partnerships include more than 240 organisations spanning 40 states, three Indian nations, and four Canadian provinces.

CO2 Geological Storage Research - The GEO-SEQ Research Project is a US public-private R&D partnership that will deliver the technology and information needed to enable the application of safe and cost-effective methods for geologic sequestration of CO2 by the year 2015. The GEO-SEQ R&D plan was developed to address the need for improved tools and technologies for cost optimisation, monitoring, modelling and capacity estimation.

The Carbon Capture and Sequestration Technologies @ MIT Program conducts research into technologies to capture, utilize, and store CO2 from large stationary sources. Their research examines carbon sequestration from multiple perspectives, including technical, economic, and political. Current research interests include technology assessments, economic modelling, analysis of regulatory and political aspects, and development of a Carbon Management Geographic Information System.

Clean Energy Systems (CES) has developed a high energy gas generation system to power turbines which in turn produce electricity with no emissions or pollutants. CES’ innovations have produced the world’s first gas generation system to sequester carbon dioxide economically when using fossil fuel or biomass fuels.

Deep-sixing CO2 - The Frio Brine Project is a US Department of Environment pilot to inject a pure carbon dioxide stream into the Frio formation in southern Texas, and uses geochemical and geophysical monitoring techniques, combined with detailed numerical modelling, to successfully predict the movement of the CCS plume. Australian researchers are involved in the Frio monitoring and verification project.
