Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a technology aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere. It involves the capture, transportation and long-term storage of carbon dioxide and other GHG in deep geological formations underground.
CCS is one of many options the Australian Government is pursuing to help reduce domestic and global GHG emissions. In addition, the Australian Government is committed to developing these technologies in the domestic and international spheres.
In November 2008, the Australian Government developed the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 legislation. This legislation will enable CCS activities in Commonwealth offshore waters. Victoria, Queensland and South Australia also have CCS legislations in place. Legislation is being developed by New South Wales and Western Australia.
Recent CCS event
The first National CCS Week was held from 28 November to 3 December 2010. It covered various CCS-based events around Australia and provided a focus for CCS as an essential part of the global GHG mitigation portfolio. The CCS week was a major opportunity for global CCS practitioners to debate, connect and exchange information.
Upcoming Events
The next CCS week is planned for November 2012.
