Measuring the success of your social media marketing is vital

Measuring the success of your social media marketing is vital. Like any form of marketing you need to know how successful it has been, and when it comes to an impartial assessment of your influence on twitter, then Twitter Grader is one of the best tools available.

This handy and free web based tool seeks to measure the power, reach and authority of a twitter account. If you are getting it right on here it will follow that you approach on twitter will soon be, if not already, delivering results.

It takes time to be successful on Twitter, which in part is why the demographic of those using the microblogging service is more mature than say facebook, where the instant gratification tends to reward younger users of social media. Of course that said, the sheer size and reach of facebook means it should not be ignored!

Measuring this organic growth against the success of other users on twitter and using the metrics that have shown the approach that has made others successful is a really good way to be certain you too are making the right decisions on Twitter.

Twitter Grader measures not only the number of followers, but in turn the power and reach of those followers, the frequency and quality of updates, the follower to following ratio and how often your own updates are retweeted.

So it was positively heartwarming today to do some month end performance measurement and discover that @Nigel_Morgan is rated at 99.9% on Twitter Grader and @DianeMorgan00 is at 99.5% and together we occupy the first and second place of what Twitter Grader calls the Twitter elite in West Berkshire.

You do not need to be clocking up followers in the thousands like us to score highly either. We also run another Twitter account @DailyPRTips which, you've guessed it, delivers public relations tips on a daily basis. It has slowly been gather followers in the right way and has already achieved a grading of 91% and is ranked the 14th most influence Twitter account locally

Significantly many of the Twitterers we regularly chat to, whose tweets we retweet and who help promote our views on life, the twittersphere, public relations and everything, also feature high up on Twitter Grader, such as @TheSourceress in 5th place with 99.1%, the designer of this website, @Adrian_Scott in 8th place with 96.1%, @RichardCharon is in 11th place with 93% and @CornExchange is in 16th place with 90%. Moving up fast is @IrunNewbury at 24th with 87%.

We are especially pleased that Le Petit Square, the popular French restaurant @LePetitSquare, has reached 9th place with 96.1% and has almost 500 followers. Morgan PR has been helping them master Twitter and it is already paying off. Defintely worth a follow if you are on Twitter and need to dine out in Newbury as it has regular exclusive offers for those who Twitter!

These stats are great just to confirm that you are indeed deploying the correct social media strategy and providing true value to your followers. Twitter really works if you:

a) have a good group of followers (as you say Nigel its not always a numbers game Quality v Quantity too!)

b) deliver great content, and that doesn't always have to be your own... this website provides lots of 'stuff' you can tweet about if you get stuck!

Good stats Nige and Di..keep it going ;)

Nigel, thanks for bringing all this together and of course for highlighting my name. It is really useful to know whether the time spent is worth the effort.

I am already beginning to pick up some new business through twitter. Mike Samuels seems pretty pleased with what we are doing for him. Plus my name is certainly beginning to circulate more around the town.

PS The new practice name is birthing as I write. Under wraps until I've bagged the domain name!

Keep up the good work in driving the Newburytwittosphere forward. I encouraged Liz Chandler and her sister to get involved. Perhaps more BNI folk could be persuaded ( I know BNI is not your flavour of the month but the peeps are what matter).

Kind regards to the Morgans Richard C

Great comments from Karen Chapple and Richard Charon!

Karen makes a really great point about Twitter being part of your social media strategy and I would add how important it is that this dovetails (not a Twitter bird related pun!) with your overall business plan too.

Good to know that Richard is encouraging more people on to Twitter and I am sure that there are BNI members with stacks to offer, indeed Morgan PR has been advising two in recent weeks on how to make the most of Twitter! So definitely nothing against BNI Tweeps, or peeps!

I've felt for a long time that BNI as a networking model has flaws that mean it is not suited to everyone. For example the restrictive model means groups block often complementary services from the same sector. Also referrals should be freely given, not required - what's that all about?!

I wish anyone who enjoys and thrives within BNI all the best and have clients who swear by the group. I know others who swear at it and mutter about '50% attrition rates each year'. So I know it doesn't work for everyone.

A great round up of the local twittersphere, Nigel!

Thanks for the mention – you have finally knocked me off the top spot as local twittering champ.

Richard Charon deserves a hat-tip too; he’s very on the ball with responding to enquiries and clearly ‘gets’ twitter for business. I feel lucky to live in Newbury where so many services are getting on twitter and engaging well with the public (and me in particular). I really believe it is the future.

Twitter is a fabulous communication tool and a great way to connect to new prospects. It does take time to build and those who stick with it will see the best results.

Twitter grader has been one of the tools that I personally use, and also use for our clients, in order to make sure we are on track.

More and more people in Newbury, across West Berkshire, throughout the Thames Valley and of course the UK and rest of the world are twittering and seeing great results.

Are you on Twitter

I am a mere 97.5!

Just one tip, I searched on Twitter Grader by location and should have been No. 2 in Cheltenham and No. 1 in Gloucestershire. I was not on the list at all.

The reason appears to be my profile was set as "Cheltenham Gloucestershire UK" without commas.

I have now changed this to include commas... "Cheltenham, Glocuestershire" - similar to your "Newbury, West Berkshire" Nigel.
