Social Media Guys: Time travelling adventures in Basingstoke

The Social Media Guys indulged in a spot of time travel at the North Hampshire Business Expo recently. We kicked off the major business event with a breakfast seminar for both exhibitors and early birds and took them on a journey into the future of social media.

The Social Media Guys - aka Graham Jones, Ant Hodges and me, Nigel Morgan took to the smaller stage at The Anvil and took a wry look back at today from our technologically advanced future and marvelled as such things as as an iPod and a magazine while variously chatting to imaginary holograms and talking about telephones being embedded behind our ears!

It was an entertaining ruse to bring us back from the future to explain about the importance of getting social media right today. Graham Jones put social media into perspective, while I explained how an organic approach can make managing multiple social media channels relatively straightforward. Ant Hodges wrapped up with some of the practicalities of setting up a blog and managing your social media feeds.

While we always prepare, we appreciate that a touch of improvisation is unfailingly entertaining. Sometimes we have an idea of what form the improv will take... but most often not. Witness a technical issue that meant the Doctor Who theme tune, which had been used when we first travelled into the future, was not available when we travelled back. In rehearsal I had suggested, tongue firmly in cheek, that we draw our hands down in front of our faces while making a 'duh duh duh DUH, duh duh duh DUH' noise. We laughed and nothing more was said... until during the performance. Graham dutifully performed the suggested moves... while Ant and I looked on and laughed along with the audience!

Hopefully the fun ensured that the audience went away both happy and a bit more clued up about social media!

Kudos to the talented commercial photographer Becki Nixon who took pictures throughout and kindly gave permission for us to use these images. Thanks Becki!

We cannot have done too bad... The Social Media Guys have already been booked for the Andover Expo on Wednesday 16th March? Will you come along?
