Fledglings emerge from latest Twitter Workshop in Newbury

It is a proud moment for any feathered parent to see their fledglings take their first steps on Twitter and this morning Morgan PR was puffing up its chest with pride as our latest brood took part in our Twitter Workshop.

We were in a new home for our soon to be monthly Twitter Workshop and Deanwood Park, known to most as a popular golf course and therapy centre, is also a first rate conference venue. We were thrilled with the hard wired broadband that Deanwood has recently had installed and it was good to have the venue’s general manager, John Bowness, taking part in the workshop, and clearly delighting that the new technology was working! How great it was not to have to have to use wireless broadband!

As ever we had a delightful mix of people on the course, which explores the tools Morgan PR recommends to get the most from Twitter. That said, while Tweetdeck lived up to its reputation, the website TweetLater proved elusive and appeared to be down throughout the morning. Still, just as I Tweeted during the event, a Dunkirk spirit ensured and everyone seemed to learn and enjoy in the right combination.

Twitter Workshop, Newbury with Morgan PRWe actually had two very different photographers on the Twitter Workshop – there was Mike Samuels, the Medical Photographer, who is a loyal supporter of Morgan PR and has been mentioned before on this blog for his mole mapping expertise. He was also generous enough to take the photographs that appear here and also on TwitPic – something else we talked about.

Whereas Vikki Champion from Vie Photography is more your wedding and portrait kind of photographer and a very good one too.

She also has a speciality in some very interesting and delightfully lovely boudoir photography too, which is showcased on her website and is quite possibly NSFW (Not Safe for Work), depending on where you work! Here at Morgan PR we are thoroughly appreciative of such talent!

We often talk about how the traditional media struggle to understand social media, so it was great to meet Narin Bahar in person. She is the talented soul and digital editor behind the Reading Chronicle’s flourishing presence and grasp on Twitter and was keen to learn about the tools that can make Twitter effective for businesses.

Those on Twitter in Newbury and West Berkshire may well have already noticed the Tweets from health food store Natures Corner? Morgan PR is helping the popular shop in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, to master Twitter ahead of its 10th anniversary later this year and Caroline Withers, who owns Natures Corner with her sister Liz Chandler, was learning the ropes on today’s Twitter Workshop.

Getting to grips with social media can be a challenge for any large organisation, which makes it all the more rewarding to see the diligence with which Lorna Smith, from health insurers WPA is putting into mastering Twitter. Certainly the first of numerous WPA representatives we know to be actively exploring how social media can help.

Recruitment is a fast growing area within social media and not least Twitter, and while jobs are being promoted on their all the time, I suspect it will be offer great advice and support that will attract employers and candidates to recruitment professionals on Twitter, something clearly grasped by Rachel O'Kennedy from High Growth Ltd, who kept everyone thinking hard today with some inspired questions.

Hannah Jones revealed that she had been on Twitter for some time, but was looking at how best to leverage it, so hopefully our Twitter Workshop will have helped! She is a professional coach who helps education professionals and Twitter is ideally placed to promote her expertise.

Last and by no means least was the first person we have had on our workshops who really can ignore our recommendation that you reward followers by following them back. Endurance athlete Mike Buss is the holder of many world records and it break many more before he stands aloft Everest in 2014 having raised £1,000,000 for Help for Heroes. Already counting such Twitterati as @LanceArmstrong among his followers, he will truly offer enough inspiration and value to earn followers without reciprocating –just check out his latest record breaking attempts!

Morgan PR is already recruiting would-be Twitter experts for the next Twitter Workshop on September 14th, with plans for monthly workshops after that, so book now to secure your spot!

We are hoping our fledglings will tells us more in the comments below and give you the opportunity to follow them. We shall be watching and nurturing them closely and can imagine treating them all to a #followfriday mention if they are trying hard enough!

This morning Diane and Nigel successfully demystified Twitter and got across useful tips and best practice in a hands-on environment.

Thanks Nigel and Diane

I am in the process of putting together a marketing plan so although I am working through what I want to achieve from my social networking portfolio, I am now confident that I can make Twitter work for me soon. In the meantime I will be continuing to tweet about anything that interests me and think that my network will enjoy.

Deanwood Park was the perfect location for this workshop. I was particularly impressed that I was able to roll up with my laptop and get instant broadband connection without having to subscribe or change anything. Thanks John.

Thanks for this - the whole session was really helpful and I'm sitting working with the reinstated TweetLater now.

It was great to meet so many people looking at utilising Twitter in different ways, and I definitely came away with lots of ideas. With Twitter being all over the news lately (I blame Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry - and possibly it being silly season!) it's easy to forget that actually it's still very much an emerging technology and as such we're still effectively early adopters. Getting some help on the best way to harness the processes and tweak messages for this new medium was much appreciated. I've also got loads of great new people to follow now!
