Top 10 Twitter Tips for Newbies at Newbury Business Group

We revealed our Top 10 Tips for Twitter Newbies at Newbury Business Group this morning; I chair West Berkshire's foremost networking organisation and was delighted to add my thoughts to the weekly 10 minutes presentations where members give an insight into their expertise.

Watching Twitter at Newbury Business Group, business networkingAs ever the group was bursting with energy this morning and it always proves to be antidote to the end of the week! You leave the Donnington Valley Golf Club venue with a definite spring in your step and hope in you heart (and hope that your heart can cope with another hearty full English breakfast!).

We have chatted about Twitter before and some members have ventured on to the micro-blogging website and are using Twitter to promote their business - including photographer Neale James, who took these photographs. You can follow him on Twitter here.

As more and more has been written and said about Twitter there had been requests to get back to basics and that is what we did today.

Our Top 10 Tips for Twitter Newbies (all delivered in less than the 140 characters allowed per Tweet) were as follows, but be sure to Download our fuller guide to the Top 10 Tips for Twitter Newbies from our website.

  1. Register your twitter name; NOW!!! (34 characters)

There were lots of burning questions from the group about Twitter ranging from #followfriday - a hashtag that Twitterers use to encourage their followers to follow people, through to Twellow - the kind of Yellow Pages of Twitter that has already brought us enquiries at Morgan PR.

Mindful of the time that something like Twitter could take there was much interest in the tools that allow automation to handle the bulk of demands that Twitter can make for you.

When I explained that several members had already asked if we would deliver some training, it seemed like everyone was keen.

So now we are planning to deliver a half day training seminar for group members and their clients on how to make the most of Twitter, and this will include using software like Tweetdeck and the TweetLater website make the most of Twitter's networking opportunities. It will be a practical workshop for those serious about mastering this social media marketing tool. This will take place on the morning of the 12th June at The Square restaurant in Weavers Walk, Newbury.

One of the members and creator of this website is Adrian Scott of Companion Computers, a talented web guru, who you can follow on Twitter here, has promptly set up a registration page for people to sign up for the Twitter Workshop. Click here to register for your place on the Twitter Workshop.

Something of a contest also emerged for people to create new Twitter words simply by substituting the first letters with 'Tw', which led to everything from 'Twademarks' through to my closing the meeting with a 'Twhats all folks!'

An enjoyable and useful ten minutes by our chairman, and resident PR specialist, Nigel Morgan.

Although I have been using Twitter for some months, Nigel presented some useful tips on how to use this ever expanding Social Media Marketing tool.

I’m looking forward to the half day training seminar and would recommend it to anybody looking to use Social Media for business.

Nigel is the grand guru of twitter and all things social media!

Many people have not got up to speed as yet and Nigel was able to provide a useful guide but in terminology that could be understood easily.

I’m looking forward to attending the half day Twitter Workshop training seminar and finding out how I can leverage this in my business.

Top notch tips here, Nigel - a really clear template for Twitter 'newbies' to follow while they find their feet, and something for those of us who've been tweeting for a little while, too. I'm off to investigate TweetLater, which may well solve a little conundrum I've been turning over in my mind for a week or two now.

Many thanks,

Adrian
