Creating reputations with Organic PR talk at Chamber Lunch

Nigel Morgan had been invited to speak about 'Organic PR' at the monthly West Berkshire lunch organised by the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce; the promise of learning how to have a bountiful harvest lured in the crowds!

There was ample time for some high calibre business networking before the terrific lunch at the Regency Park Hotel in Thatcham today - and it certainly was some of the finest food on the networking circuit (those who network regularly will understand how much outstanding food stands out!). And with 25 people attending there was a good mix of old faces and new from business not only from West Berkshire, but throughout the Thames Valley.

Pictured above are Sales & Marketing Manager for the Chamber, Ginette Gower, Nigel, the Chamber President Ian Vickerage, the Chamber's West Berkshire Business Manager Gary Cranford, and your blogger for this story, Diane Morgan!

There was rapt attention as both Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce members and guests alike discovered the blissfully simple secrets of 'Organic PR'. Which as Nigel explained, are taking the stories in your business - what you talk about at events like today, what you tell your clients and your family - and leveraging those not only through the traditional media with press releases, but more so with social media. Using channels like Twitter and LinkedIn, blogs and newsletters, Squidoo and 12 Seconds. Names and tactics that were familiar with some and new ideas for others. He also talked about the near fabled 'Google Killer' that is computational search engine Wolfram|Alpha.

This approach creates a lasting buzz around your business, a virtuous circle as each story is used in multiple ways and reinforces itself online, leaving lasting footprints for Google to follow.

Nigel spoke in detail about this booming social media marketing phenomenon online. He strongly advised everyone in the room to register their Twitter domain names; as some of the seasoned networkers in the room have heard us preach this message many times, there really is no excuse for not having done that yet!

We also blogged about it here on this website last month, so if you are reading this and haven’t registered yet, stop right not and click here to join Twitter and register your Twitter name. Think of variants of your own name, your business name and a guru type of name too. We use DailyPRTips for example.

Twitter is potentially a hugely influential marketing weapon in your social media armoury and you can learn more in this excellent free download of a report called Beginning Twitter, written by the immensely talented Graham Jones, The Internet Psychologist, who has generously allowed us to offer this report to our readers.

Organic PR is simply about leveraging what you do and making your blog, website, Linked in, Twitter and other marketing work in harmony to build the permission led relationship that will create the sales needed to enjoy beautiful results and a bountiful harvest, so start sowing the seeds now!

Naturally if anyone at today's wonderful event needs any help or advice you only need ask! We also offer a professional Twitter service where we can Tweet for you. More information can be downloaded here.

Finally we should thank Gary Cranford for his generous invitation to Nigel to speak and we would like to express that thanks by urging businesses to explore how the local Chamber can work for them.

A number of extra delegates had specifically booked onto the event for the subject matter. It was evident from the straw poll questions that the audience had mixed exposure to various forms of social media. This was an excellent opportunity to hear and understand how the use of these formats can and will have genuine business benefits. The added benefit is to hear it from Nigel - the passion comes across. I ask all of my speakers to deliver something thought provoking, that was acheived. I have subsequently downloaded the beginners guide to twittering. Watch out for us!!

Thank you Gary, that is really terrific feedback! We've been getting emails and even tweets from Twitter from people who were at the lunch so we have even managed to inspire action! Downloads of our Beginners Guide to Twitter, written by The Internet Psychologist Graham Jones, have been going bonkers since the seminar!

It sounds a great meeting, sorry I missed it. Glad to hear that my Twitter booklet is proving popular. However, downloading the Beginner's Guide is one thing - taking action on it is another. The one thing that appears to separate the people who make a success out of social media and those who don't is action. The people doing most with social media are the ones making the most money. All too often I find that people send a tweet or two, add one item a week to Facebook and then complain that neither work for them...! The more businesses use Twitter and other social media, the more they gain. It really is very straightforward; so if you have downloaded my booklet, fantastic - thank you. But if you haven't done anything with Twitter yet do so right now, before someone else muscles in on your territory...!

In total agreement with you on the food, it was very good. The problem with networking is an expanding waistline so not sure that great food is going to be good for me in the long term..... The advice given on the day and in the free download are invaluable - and I agree that taking action is the key here - as such I have appointed a marketing manager, my wife Katie, to be my social networking specialist, will let you know how that goes. As a novice Katie is absorbing all the tips and tricks as I write.

I think that Graham has hit the nail on the head with his approach and i guess with any form of social media you get out of it what you put in and the odd tweet here or there wont connect you with people or make you money!
