Improve your Twitter reputation by blogging Follow Friday

What do you think about #FollowFriday? Does it clutter Twitter every Friday and irritate you? Or do you use it to thank your finest followers and urge others to follow them while also finding other great Twitters to follow?

For those less familiar with Twitter, #followfriday is a phenomenon that has taken Twitter by storm and makes their servers shudder each and every Friday as people Tweet recommendations. The # or hashtag means even more people can follow.

Twitter guru @NikkiPilkington recently blogged about the problem after internet psychologist @GrahamJones twittered to say he had been unfollowed by someone resentful of his use of #followfriday. Nikki went on to suggest using blogs to promote who you think should be followed, which had the added benefit of great search engine optimisation and driving more traffic to your website.

It also creates a permanent record of all the great people you recommend on Twitter and if other people use the comments to add their own recommendations it could be far more effective than trying to do it through Twitter or even Tweetdeck.

It is only right and proper that Twitter guru and abundant fount of all things Tweeted @NikkiPilkington should get first blogged #followfriday and also @GrahamJones, who actually inspired me, @Nigel_Morgan to first start blogging in 2006 and to Twitter in 2007.

So Newbury Tweeps that myself and @DianeMorgan00 would like to urge you to #followfriday are:

Web design guru and creator of this blog @Adrian_Scott – what he doesn’t know about web stuff and software design you can fit in less than 140 characters!

The gentle dental wizard of Newbury and West Berkshire, it has to be a friendly #followfriday on our blog for @RichardCharon .

I’ve been wearing a hat in the sun and using sunblock this year thanks to the heart warming advice and support of the medical photographer and skin cancer evangelist @MikeSamuels68.

For fabulous French food in Newbury @LePetitSquare and for health food #fridayfollow lovely Twitter newbies @NaturesCorner, both tweet chat, quotes and offers.

Copywriter @AdrianHiggs is another great asset to Twitter – do follow him! While the very real virtual PA @Inapickle_va is also worth following. Still in Newbury @mwsmedia2009 adds plenty to the Twittersphere.

Quietly twittering and in need of more recognition are two from Inspiration Inc in Newbury, and both @InspirationCopy and @InspirationSEO are going places on Twitter for sure.

Recruitment Queen of Newbury and the City of London is@maddrennan, while if your career needs coaching to be prepared for that dream job, follow @Michelle_Lucas.

Legal eagles among the local Twittersphere in Newbury are @clmlawbits who truly strike the right balance on Twitter of between work, rest and play – as reported in our blog naming and shaming those who do not!

Speaking of that blog post, we also had terrific comments and support from followers old and new and suggest you follow them too! Unless already mentioned: @hodgesant, @rachaelblogs, @garygorman, @markshaw, @carcaredirect, @pksproperty, @claireshiels, @lifestyleonline, @carterjonas (not least for being brave enough to comment!), @marshandparsons, @juswantrai, @partlypolitical.

We also want to suggest you follow @MaritzaParra @lovepeaceunity @successsecret @UnseeingEyes @MARCOME @AuntieStress @LoriMoreno for their wonderful guidance and inspiration delivered daily through lovely Tweets. Also brimming with fun and inspiring tweets is @jbridgman and we love the great motivation and quotes tweeted by @Iconic88. All worthy of #followfriday!

Who should we #followfriday?

So what do you think? Have we missed anyone? Please add you thoughts below and of course add your #followfriday people too! And don't forget the signature of each comment is another link back to your Twitter account, together with any blog, website or LinkedIn account too. Great SEO!

#followfriday is a great idea it keeps the dialogue going between you and your friends and used properly it tells other tweeple about them and you.

Only trouble is (avoiding the but word)the more people you #followfriday, it becomes increasingly demanding on time and consequently we all start cutting corners, with the all important comments ending up as a pretty meaningless string of @names.

I do try to work something out to say about those tweeple I tweet with during the week, but as with today I really don't have time to do them justice.

Shouldn't be doing this in fact but I think it's an important part of keeping my profile up.

Thanks again Nigel for the kind comments on the blog and for keeping me motivated to tweet. Great work!!

Hi Nigel and Diane!

Great blog post as always! When I began using twitter, I thought it was a huge timewaster and I let my account sit for about 6 months. When I finally began using it, I enjoyed connecting with people a little TOO much and found myself spending too much time tweeting and not creating products or teaching.

As everything, twitter and #followfriday should be used in moderation. When I do #followfriday recommendations, I either thank those who recommended me or I give a little info as to WHY I'm recommending others. If people unfollow me for joining the #followfriday playground, well... good!

I do really like the idea of blogging your #followfriday recommendations.

Twitter is a great tool for meeting other like-minded people, for finding new JV partners, for finding new students AND teachers (because at some point we're all in one role or the other, arent' we...?)

I now use a timer when tweeting because it's easy to get sucked into the Twitterverse... if you aren't careful, but I love it and will always be an active #followfriday participant. Hey, that's how I met you guys and I love having you in my life...!

Continue the #followfriday Celebration!

Love, Maritza

Hi Nigel

Glad to see other people following on from what Nikki suggests. It seems like nearly all my tweets on a Friday are tagged #followfriday.

I tried the blog idea once before, I am going to try it again today.

Regards

Sarah

#followfriday was great for us early adopters, but as with all fads it beginds to pale when it is used as much as some tweeters use it.

Now #followfriday is the same as passing a person on the sidewalk who utters, "Awright?"

It's started to lose meaning due to overuse/abuse & is just a habit more than anything. My view!

Hey Nigel & Diane,

I never understood the power of twitter until I recently took to it and put twitterberry on my blackberry. I did a few tweets whilst I was in India and got asked by so many people when I got back how my trip went.

As for #followfriday still learning more each day tweet by tweet and there is also the whole etiquette thing to learn too.

It's all good fun and a not so brave new world.

First the was google, then Facebook now twitter where will the next wave come from.

I'm so pleased I have joined the world of Twitter, and I can't stop myself each day from reading the interesting tweets that people make. Thanks for introducing me to it Nigel & Diane - and for the training that has really helped me on my twitter-way! :0)

Thanks Nigel.

It's good to see this approach to #followfriday in action - I reckon it works well. Time I started a blog, methinks.

I was going to add my recommendations here, but I've run out of day. Next week!

I appreciate this blog post. Followfriday has become somthing other than it's original intent. I must confess that I have been guilty of the big list recommendations. My motivation was that I follow so many wonderful people who contribute something and I wanted to get them all in.

Recently, I've felt that list recommendations were actually not benefitting those I follow as much as intended. When we see a big blog of @'s, we tend not to see the names and skip right over it. The first change I made was to include a few words to express the value I get from those recommended. that was a start, but it didn't go far enough.

Today I decided to make a genuine personal recommendation for each individual, or just a few at a time who share similar gifts. I may not be able to recommend all the quality people I follow, but the recommendations means more.

We all learn as we go and make our fair share of mistakes along the way. I won't unfollow someone because they recommend blocks of people. At least they've taken the time & trouble to try to lift others up. I think the motivation behind the action is important.

Thanks for providing a discussion forum for this topic. Well done!

Thank you Nigel for the mention in this blog - I think that the blogging #ff is more meaningful and helpful. Long lists of @ are way too common and lose their intent.

Until our blog is underway we will space out our #ff's to a few with some descriptions, as with anything - its best in moderation!

Great article Nigel.....

On the whole I like Follow Friday, it shows me a huge amount of people which could be of real interest, especially when other media folk recommend other media folk...

Although yes, it does block up the old Tweetdeck every week, so I really like Nikki Pilkington's idea of blogging the people you recommend, something I'll be doing in future on My Gob Is My Job.com!

Catch you later Tweeps! :o)

Blogging about those you meet, either on Twitter, LinkedIn or out and about ensures that you will never go topicless.(Bet you had to read that twice!)

If done with the right intention, it is a heart-happy way to deal with stress. There is an abundance of creativity, challenge and fun in identifying someone for the "Post of Honour" position. This leads to what I call the "Reverberational Effect" - the reverberating of positive emotions that are generated during this exercise.

A big thank you for creating a reverberation that is felt clear across the ocean, and over our lakes, rivers, prairies and mountains to the west coast of Canada.
