FREE: Daily Social Media Checklist - master social media

We are often asked how much time you should spend online managing your social media each day, but perhaps a better question is what tasks should be performed each day. So a Daily Social Media Checklist would be a big help we think!

We have been inspired by the blogging genius of Chris Brogan, who originally published ’19 Presence Management Chores You Could Do Everyday’ back in June 2009. We have taken that and kept the best bits and added our own flavour and pushed the list to 25 tasks – although you’ll be pleased to know some of our daily tasks are actually once weekly!

This takes into account new innovations like Twitter Lists, which didn’t exist when Chris Brogan published his blog. We also differ our view on how LinkedIn should be used – no LIONS! Check out our blog: LinkedIn: Beware the LIONS for more.

Also, we would add that Hootsuite would be ideal to manage all the updating of these different social media platforms detailed below. Primarily for Twitter it also allows you to update and follow your activities on Facebook and LinkedIn. Do be careful about mixing different social media language which we have also written about before: Don't be lazy - use the right languages on social media.

Let us know what you think of the list in the comments below, especially if you have daily tasks that you think should be added to the list. You can download a PDF of the list here.

Twitter

  1. Say hello, comment on the day and ask a question with your first tweet!
  2. Be sure to respond to everyone who replies, retweeting if possible.
  3. Find seven things worth retweeting in your general feed and share.
  4. Reply to at least five things with full responses (not just “thanks”).
  5. Once a week create a new Twitter List, and add five people daily – tweet them to say you have. Thank those who add you to their lists.
  6. On #followfriday choose five Twitters you admire, tweet a follow for each and say why – don’t just list people. Think about blogging your #followfriday.
  7. Point out a few people that you admire. It shows your mindset, too.
  8. 10 minutes of just polite two-way chit chat goes far.

Facebook

  1. Check in on birthdays on the home page. (Want a secret? Send the birthday wish via Twitter or email. Feels even more deliberate.)
  2. Respond to any comments on your wall.
  3. Post a status message at least daily, something engaging or interesting.
  4. Comment on at least seven people’s status messages or updates.
  5. Share at least 3 interesting updates that you find.
  6. If you belong to groups or fan pages, leave a new comment or two.
  7. Join at least two fan pages each week and post messages.

LinkedIn

  1. Accept only invitations from people you know and trust.
  2. Search for new business contacts on LinkedIn and personalise an invite to become LinkedIn, invite those not on the network to join.
  3. Drop into Q&A and see if you can volunteer 2-3 answers at least once a week.
  4. Provide one recommendation per week for people you can honestly and fully recommend.

Blogs

  1. Visit your blog’s comments section and comment back on at least 5 replies.
  2. Visit their blogs and leave comments when you have time.
  3. While on those sites, use a tool like StumbleUpon and promote their good work.
  4. Write the occasional post promoting the good work of a blog in your network.
  5. Visit a leading blog from within your sector of the market and swot up.
  6. Stop by the Morgan PR blog and read the latest social media and PR tools

Great post!

If a marketer or business owner isn't careful, it's easy to spend hours on social media becoming involved in conversations and downloading tools which do not contribute to the bottom line. This checklist will certainly help keep us on the right track - making every activity efficient and effective.

Interesting, I guess these are rough guidelines but have to disagree with a few points...

I'd argue that we all use social media different and there is no one size fits all solution.

On twitter, which I use a lot, anyone who constantly posts 15-20 a day is soon ignored as it just becomes noise. Also "thank you for following/retweeting" messages almost make me instantly unfollow whoever sends them, those feelings are implied and a bland thank you makes me feel like I'm following a bot spitting out automated messages.

I think users should use social media as it suits them and more importantly reflects THEIR personality not some predefined formula. The reason why SM is so successful is it's hard to fake.

Thanks Clifico, they are indeed rough guidelines and judging by the retweets many of my followers liked it!

Almost daily we are asked by businesses about best practice on social media and this checklist aims to help them. Many will not initially know what 'suits them' until they get going, and until then this is a good way to start!

I notice you are a relatively light user of Twitter Clifico, something you will find as you follow more and get more followers - you simply will not notice if anyone tweets 15-20 times a day - unless of course you are interested in them and they offer enough value!/

Thanks again for commenting - that is both of us with a couple of boxes ticked off for the day eh?!

Hi Nigel

I'm so enjoying your posts! Inspirational and rational - love it! My best email from you yet has to be the '13 Killer Questions to ask a 'Social Media Expert'. I agree wholeheartedly. Too many wannabes out there without the marketing experience behind them. Keep at it!

Thanks Nigel.

Enjoyed your presentation at Keep Biz Local in Reading Berkshire last Friday.

And thanks for this useful list. I guess it gets quicker with familiarity and use.
