4Networking Marlborough enjoys a fun insight into Twitter
We were talking Twitter at 4Networking Marlborough this morning as Morgan PR embarked on the first of four 4Sight Slots that will take us way out west this week as I also deliver my 4Sight Slot at 4Networking Chippenham, Bridgwater and finally Gordano.
4Networking Marlborough is, like every 4Networking group I visit, warm and welcoming and it was good to be back and seeing familiar faces like Area Leader Helen Silver of the Property Styling Group and Group Leader Gail Gibson of True Expressions again and also the ever smiling, bow-tie wearing David Burns of Marketing & Research Products and Phil Hendy of PAH Accounting.
My Twitter tips went down well during the 4Sight Slot and there was time for questions, that typically explored the time it can take to be successful on Twitter – which is surprisingly less than you would think, and the return on investment – which of course will vary for each user, but is definitely there if you use Twitter correctly.
On to the one-to-ones, that unique part of 4Networking that effectively guarantees three business meetings and my first one-to-one was with Lynn Harman, who felt like she already knew me! She has met Diane Morgan at other networking events and had heard about my expertise! Okay, Diane might be my lovely wife and a fellow director, but anything that leads your reputation to precede you helps!
Lynn runs the successful Telemarketing Services, which covers the spectrum of telemarketing services, however he niche is working with public speakers and she already has an impressive portfolio of clients for whom the company secures events.
I had already started chatting about Twitter with my second appointment, photographer Bruce Boulton earlier in the meeting as we believe photographers have a great advantage as links to photographs get proportionately more clicks on Twitter – unlike a blog post or PDF download, a simple link to a photo require little investment, but could provoke significant emotions in the viewer – if these are the right ones then they are more likely to take action, keep following, Retweet you and recommend you to others!
It was refreshing to see Bruce, who runs Lantern Photography, had a refreshing and professional approach and was skilled enough to show the value he adds in a world when everyone thinks they become a photographer because they have a digital SLR!
Although relatively new to Twitter @lanternphoto clearly gets it and had strategies to follow people whose followers he was interested in working with and had some good insight on how, for example the Dragon’s Den entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne could be using his better.
Accountant Phil Hendy is already and accomplished Twitter, but was keen to know what more he could do; during the 4Sight Slot I had talked about the importance of that 80/20 split between social and business and Phil effectively achieves this through a personal account @HendyPhilHendy and a business account, @PAHaccounting
However, our concern would be that you miss the opportunity to market your business to your personal followers. While they need to see you being sociable, if you get the mix right they will also visit your blog, learn about your business and potentially become raving fans!
Finally, much kudos should go to the sterling job group leader Gail Gibson who had done promoting the event – she had alighted on the Rockin’ Robin song and had been encouraging people to attend with Twitterfied lyrics.
They were similar to a near legendary video on YouTube from Mac addict, blogger and creative genius @iJustine, which I share with you here:
