How to double your website traffic seminar at NRG Networks

“How to double your web site traffic” was the intriguing title of the seminar presented today at NRG Networks in Reading by The Internet Psychologist Graham Jones.

Graham simplified what we needed to be doing to make our websites work better for us. The golden rule? Remember that people want to read fresh, new interesting copy on your site. Reading is the number one activity on line, so updating your site regularly (Graham stipulates daily!) is a must.

To be fair we have learned this particular lesson from Graham in the past, for it was he that inspired Nigel to start blogging in 2006 and hundreds of posts later it is still going strong, still driving traffic and just one way we keep our website updated for our readers and the search engines alike.

There are two key steps to increased web traffic: Content and Promotion. Content can be generated in many ways including blogs, quizzes, hints and tips and guest articles. If this sounds like a lot of hard work, there are ways it can be made easier, with outsourcing and planning. As audience participation, Graham got us to find our favourite articles in today’s papers (pictured right) and shared with us the common points in an attention grabbing story. These centre around 5 points:

  • Topical
  • Relevant
  • Unusual
  • Trouble (most good stories usually involve conflict of some kind!)
  • Human Interest

Promotion is about using social media marking to get your message out there. Morgan PR are on LinkedIn (well that's where you will find Nigel!) and Twitter (that's me!) together with a growing host of other social media and use these to build relationships and promote both ourselves and our clients.

Recently Graham carried out an experiment where he stopped Twittering for a week and saw his website plunge down the search engine rankings; absolute proof that this can a measurable effect on sending readers to your website.

Graham’s website is, as you’d expect, bursting with useful downloads and content, so do have a look and find out how he can help you improve your website and get more readers.
