How it works
Common Questions
Q. Who are Demotix?

A. Demotix is a citizen journalism news wire. Anyone can register and join our community - it's over 25,000 strong and growing. We accept your photojournalism stories and sell them to news media organisations - as well as placing them into photo archives, where they can be found and purchased as stock photos long after they're out of the news. Unlike many websites and photo agencies you always keep the copyright to your images.

Back to questions

Q. How do we sell your news?

A. The first step in the process is to upload your photos to Demotix. Our publishing team will take a look, and your photos will quickly be placed onto our site - giving you the benefit of all the hard work we've put into SEO, making them easily discoverable, and also functioning as an e-commerce platform.

Our dedicated direct sales team will then take on your photos and push them hard to our clients in the news media. We also have direct feeds into a large number of newspapers and other publications across the world.

Your photos are pushed out to our reselling network, including Corbis' much larger sales teams, who have hundreds of thousands of clients of their own who will then be exposed to your work.

Q. Why upload to Demotix?

A. Demotix offers you a number of benefits that you wouldn't get working entirely on your own or with another agency. We have a dedicated sales and collections team, who take out all of the hard work and time spent maintaining relationships with picture desks - and chasing them up for weeks and months afterwards for payment.

We give you instant access to our worldwide distribution network, which will get your photos into the hands of editors you might not be able to reach on your own.

Having your images published on our website puts your journalism and your name within reach of the hundreds of thousands who visit looking for news - we are rapidly approaching 1 million pageviews per month.

Most importantly, unlike many other agencies, you retain all of the copyright to your work. You grant us a license to sell your work on your behalf, but you are free to use and sell your images in any way you wish - giving you the freedom to use Demotix as one of a variety of revenue streams from your photography.

Back to questions

Q. Where have we sold?

A. We sell all of our images at industry freelancing rates - not the micro stock rates paid by some other agencies. We take a commission of 50% for the work we put into selling your photographs, a rate you'll find difficult to beat anywhere else.

We regularly sell images into internationally recognised newspapers, broadcasters, and news sites, including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The New York Times, Time Magazine, Global Voices, and a list of others too long to name.

Exclusive or otherwise outstanding images and sets can be extremely lucrative. In the past we have sold sets for up to $5000.

Back to questions

A. - you keep it, simple as that.
- You're free to sell via any other method you like, we are an extra revenue source

Back to questions

Q. What is news?

A. Anything can be news to the right person, a story about a local development as much as about the toppling of a dictator. As long as it really happened and the photos are owned by you, the limit is your ability to get the photos.

We've sold stories about escaped pelicans from the zoo and dogs in suits as well as photos of protests and riots - as long as someone might be interested in seeing it, it's news.

Back to questions

Q. Who contributes to Demotix?

A. Our contributors are all kinds of people - from lucky bystanders who happened to be present at a big news event with a camera, to professional freelance photographers. We accept contributions from anyone, as long as they have a story to tell. You could contribute too by speeding through our online registration.

Back to questions

Q. Where do the photos go?

A. Our photos have been sold to all sorts of media organisations, publications and websites - from the front pages of newspapers to online news sites to illustrative images for in-house publications. As well as our in house sales team, we have a network of resellers who promote contributors' work all over the world, including Corbis, whose world wide sales teams reach 100,000 clients in 50 countries. Selected images will also be added to Corbis' archive, a huge stock photography archive meaning your photos will go on earning money after the news is old.

Back to questions

Q. How can I earn money through Demotix?

A. When you upload photos to us, we publish it on our site, they are automatically pushed out to our resellers and clients all over the world. Our sales team works hard to get your images noticed, bought, and published. If they are sold, you keep 50% of whatever fee is paid for them. We charge full industry rates for your images, not micro stock and have sold images and sets for up to £5000!

Back to questions

Q. What kind of images does Demotix sell?

A. You don't have to have expensive equipment to be a freelance Demotix photographer. If you have a camera, or even a camera phone, you can contribute - and news is easier to find than you think. It doesn't have to be the fall of a dictator or riots in the streets; you could take photos of events in your local area. Almost everything is news to someone. If it happened, and you took a photo, someone will probably be interested.

Back to questions

Q. What should I do now?
