Košice

Košice is the centre of Východné Slovensko as well as of Košický kraj. It is the second largest city in Slovakia with population of 235,006. The city is divided into four districts and 22 sub-districts. The steel industry dominates the economic activity of the city and the region as a whole. Mechanical engineering, the food industry, trade and services are also important sectors. The city is a major international transport node and is a cultural, historical and educational centre. The city’s proximity to the borders of Hungary and the Ukraine makes Košice an attractive location for foreign investment and cross-border cooperation. Several major national institutions such as the Constitutional Court are situated in Košice. The Mayor is the city’s executive body and citizens are represented by 80 members on the City Council , by 22 mayors of the sub-districts and by 413 regional deputies. Košice city together with Košice-okolie District forms a Larger Urban Zone of 345,227 inhabitants covering an area of 1,777.3 km2.
