Russula virescens is a very popular edible fungus in Europe, growing in summer especially with Castanea and other broad-leaved trees, usually just out of the forest.

The strongly crackled cap cuticle is a very good feature to recognize this species, which is one of the most distinctive in the European Russula flora.
