Kutaisi has an intensive partnership with the 17 cities all over the world. The formation of each friendship relationships with them has its own history. Building up the connections with those cities took place in different situations and in different political circumstances. However the goal is the same and unchangeable – to support the mutual cultural introduction of the people with different backgrounds, make them closer and cooperate in different fields of social life. The first city which was officially announced as a sister city and was signed the contract about the partnership in 1989 was Newport. The partnership foresees the cooperation in cultural and economical spares. Newport was always supporting Kutaisi, share the experience in different ways and work together to developed the united projects. The occurrences in Georgia and in Ukraine during 2003-2004, the similar tendency of development and the common political interests caused the formation of especially warm relationships between these two countries. The active cooperation on the state level stimulated the Georgian and Ukrainian cities to develop the tight partnerships. In 2005 the partnership agreements were signed with two of Ukrainian cities (Zaporojie and Kharkov). Later, in 2007 Dnepropetrovsk and Jitomiri were also joined to the friendship agreement from the Ukrainian side. At the same time the relationships were renewed with two more Ukrainian cities (Donetsk and Lvov) which were the sister cities of Kutaisi since 1990. Georgian-Ukrainian cooperation covers the many fields of social activeness (culture, sport, education tourism and so on). As the perfect model of cooperation the interests of both sides always meet each other and it makes us able to get a mutual benefit. From the beginning of 2009 the cooperation with the Polish city Poznan became more intensive. The public workers of Kutaisi governmental institutions were able to introduce with the system of local governing in Poznan, analyze the organizational structure and working style through the project “Effective Local Governance”. The final step to the cooperation was the partnership agreement betweet the city of Poznan and city of Kutaisi. After the document was signed, Poznan became the third sister city of Kutaisi from UE member states after Newport and Nikea.
