Tszyu joins boxing’s hall of fame

by Vladimir Kozlov at 14/06/2011 21:04

Kostya Tszyu, the Russian-born undisputed Junior Welterweight World Champion, has been inducted into the international boxing hall of fame, becoming the first ever Russian boxer to be so honored.

The induction ceremony, at which Tszyu, 41, was inducted alongside former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, Mexico legend Julio Cesar Chavez, Mexican trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, referee Joe Cortez and Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone, was held last weekend in New York.

“I have achieved many things in my 30 years in boxing and this really defines that legacy,” Tszyu was quoting as saying by the Courier Mail. “I’m definitely in good company when you look at who else has been honored over the years.”

Tszuyu is a four-time junior welterweight champion and the winner of 31 of his 34 professional fights, including 25 by knockout. And while Tszyu, whose last fight was an 11th round loss to Ricky Hatton in Manchester in 2005, has never officially retired, he apparently isn’t considering a return to the ring. Although Tszyu, who is of mixed Russian, Korean and Mongol descent, left Russia for Australia in the early 1990s, at about the same time when he turned professional, he still holds a Russian passport in addition to an Australian one.

He recently started training Russian cruiserweight Denis Lebedev helped him to a victory over American multi-world title winner Roy Jones Jr. in Moscow last month.
