The edna metadata standard 1.1 was based on the internationally recognised Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) and consistent with the Australian Government Locator Service (AGLS).

The purpose of the standard was to support interoperability across all sectors of education and training in Australia in the area of online resource discovery and management. it assisted people in education and training engaged in the production and use of well-described digital content. The standard supported the technical specifications required to exchange and deliver data on request  with structured coding. A key goal in applying the standard was to facilitate aggregation of metadata about educational resources for the edna repository from all states and territories, and all sectors of education and training,

Version 1.0 of the edna metadata application profile was first published in August 1998.

Version 1.1 was ratified by the AICTEC Standards and Interoperability Committee in December 2000. The work of maintaining the standard was initially conducted by the edna Metadata Standard Working Group which reported to the AICTEC Standards Sub-Committee and the education.au limited Board.
