LOOKING FOR THE JUST JUDGES

On the night of April 10-11 1934 two panels of the Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb), the world famous painting by the Van Eyck brothers, disappeared from Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent (Belgium). An anonymous extortionist sent 13 letters to the bishop and gave one panel back, John the Baptist. The second panel, The Just Judges, is still missing.

Who stole The Just Judges? Why did he choose that panel? Is it true that prominent people were involved? Where can the missing panel be now? The biggest art crime of the 20th century still raises a lot of questions. Belgodrome offers some surprising answers in The Van Eyck Theft, a guided walking tour in Ghent exploring the most important places in this intriguing case. The tour has been developed by Rudy Pieters, author of De wraak van het Lam Gods ("The revenge of the Mystic Lamb", 2004), one of the reference works on this case.
