JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An Action News investigation exposed illegal aliens living and working in our community. They agreed to share the story if we hid their identities.

"We only came here to work and try and have a better life," said an illegal alien working in construction in St. Johns County.

His hope for a better life is costing many Americans their jobs. They'll work for less money, which is putting local construction workers in a tough position. But law enforcement says there's little they can do about it.

"Basically we're looking for individuals who are threats to this community," says Claude Colvin, an intelligence lieutenant with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Colvin is part of a partnership between JSO and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency or ICE. The partnership is called 287-G. It gives JSO the power to question immigration status only if the person has been arrested for a crime. But if an illegal alien doesn't commit a crime, there's nothing local officers can do.

Under the 287-G program, more than 5,000 people have been questioned in Jacksonville. Of those, 900 were found to be here illegally and were turned over to ICE. If they're convicted of a crime, those illegals must serve time in the U.S. Then a federal judge decides whether or not to deport them. But some state lawmakers say this process isn't solving the illegal immigration problem. They want to take things a step further in Florida by creating an Arizona-style immigration law.

Governor Rick Scott campaigned on a promise to bring the law here. The controversial law allows local law enforcement to question the immigration status of anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. Illegal aliens in our community told Action News they are fearful of the law.

"It's really bad they want to bring that law here. We Hispanics are very hardworking."

But two state legislators have already introduced bills similar to the Arizona law. For now, local law enforcement can't do anything about illegal aliens in our community -- taking American jobs -- unless they commit a crime.

There's probably about 25,000 ILLEGAL aliens sitting back laughing their heads off because the local police departments are powerless to do anything against them. They are being protected by the Constitution of the United States, and still remaining NON-TAXPAYERS in the U.S. It's time for ICE to move in and start arresting and deporting the ILLEGALS and sending the employers of ILLEGAL aliens to jail. You can bet that the ILLEGAL aliens have already called home and invited more friends ands relatives to "come on over", because the cops WONT do anything.

ILLEGALS GO HOME. They aren't just poor little people wanted to provide for their families. They are entitlement suckers. If you can't afford to have a child then don't have them. Mexicans live like roaches, increase the crime in our neighborhoods, suck off the system, and laugh all the way to the bank! Here's to AZ law coming to FL.

The real story is about the employers who hire the illegal aliens at wages no American will accept. These businessmen are not only robbing Americans of decent employment, but stealing taxes from our country. Not to mention they are participating in modern day form of slavery by wages that are below the minimum allowed, requiring workers to live in crowded, unhealthy housing.

I find it hard to believe that local law officers can't enforce a federal law. This is a cop-out! If you rob a bank it is a federal law, so why do the locals respond? Is that profiling? That is a lame excuse not to throw them out of my country.

i have a solution that is not racial profiling and would work just fine. if you as a us citizen hires an illegal then you lose all assets. no exceptions, your house ,car ,business and anything you have of value. that would stop it. who would risk everything to hire them. try it and see i bet it would work. the illegals would go back home because there would be no work. then another way is to make sure they are a citizen before they get medical, food stamps, and housing. i say do it right or don't do it at all.

Make E-Verify mandatory to all business. Fine those and shut their operation down immediately for non-compliance. Oh no that can't happen, that would resolve the problem. Both the businesses and the workers are law breakers. Illegals - higher crime rate. Where is Ellis Island when you need it. I bet that's where most of the European descendants came from (directed to the previous comment)

Under Title XXXI, Chapter 448, Section .09 of the FL Statues it is illegal for an employer to hire those persons featured if the story was true and the JSO are not enforcing the law and should be looked into by the City Council.

i was curious so i pulled up the oath taken by law enforcement officers. words to the effect i swear to to protect and defend the the constitution of the united states and the laws of florida. where does it say certain dept are prohibited from enforcing certain laws or that they soley responsible for enforcing certain laws. i believe as law enforcement are as obligated to enforcement of spitting on the sidewalk as they are robbing a 7-11.. just taken in priority....second the answer is not only getting the illegals but making it costly to employers who hire the illegals. if i catch and keep an illegal size red fish they can take my boat all my equipment the fish and fine me $500. that is a high price to pay so if its close i err on the side of caution and put the fish back....
