According to the Department of Health, only 31 per cent of people with learning disabilities voted in the 2005 General Election, when 61 per cent of the population of Britain as a whole cast their votes. The award-winning website www.promotethevote.co.uk/ aims to raise awareness by supporting and encouraging people with learning disabilities to have a better understanding of the voting process, to become active citizens and to register to vote. The project has been funded by the Electoral Commission.
