Chanel: film noir for spring 2011

chanelspring2011These days most fashion houses not only produce a big show, but a film to go with it. Chanel is no exception, delving into the trend -- and the aesthetics of la nouvelle noir film -- to present a ready-to-wear collection in "Up Close" (see the video below). Thoughts on Juan Williams, freedom of speech, NPR and McCarthyism

juanWilliamsAt least in the 1950s, artists, journalists and writers deemed to be un-American had to refuse to talk to the Congressional version of the inquisition before being fired. A new Wall Street Journal poll highlights a 7-point gap between voters who plan to vote Republican versus those who want to vote Democrat. The liberal apathy so far remains unexplained except in general terms -- the ongoing economic slump, high unemployment, and the ongoing foreclosure crisis are, however, oft-cited.
