‘Sky’pe is no limit

With Facebook splashing out on the ‘celebrated’ intellectuals of a leading institute in the city, many are awe-struck at the deals being clinched and paving futures through Skype. While the dynamics of this might not be the same as a face-to-face interaction, the companies and employees are skyrocketing to cushy jobs through Skype. Notwithstanding the technical glitches or the ability to blame any hitches on technology, many feel that it bridges the geographical gap and further reduces the barriers in the job market.

Speaking of the benefits of Skype-connects, Sanjeev Rao, an IIT-M student says, “Students are constrained by geography and lack of access to the right people at the right time. With technology, it is far easier to connect and Skype has been a great boon. Employers won’t think twice, as it is not an expensive mechanism.” But do such skype interviews really hold up in the long run. Do employers truly detect an employee who will be the right-fit? And how long do such employees last in an organisation, at which they haven’t had a single real interaction with, before signing a contract? While some say it’s a good move there are people who think organisation could be misled. Bhavana Sharma, HR says, “Using technology might have its disadvantages, you might have glitches during the interview but if the recruiting organisation is prepared well then they will be in a position to rectify it. Employees also can have some issues of fitting in and understanding the ground reality of an organisation, but with such large salaries I’m sure they contend with it all,” she laughs.

Earlier if students were to submit projects they were not shared but now the projects of students are shared online so even the employers can tap into interesting minds. Technology can most certainly bridge geographical and mental gap through cutting edge dynamics of interaction, assessment and analysis.
