Magus
Highlights
  • First appearance in Chrono Trigger (1995)
  • Known as Maoh ("Demon King") in Japan
  • Uses a freaking scythe

So, let's see. You've got a character who uses Shadow Magic and fights with a scythe? Yeah, that sounds like more than enough to merit a spot on this list. With those kinds of credentials, Magus couldn't possibly be anything but a villain, right? From his early days as a brooding, irritable child to his later incarnation as a brooding, irritable adult, Magus has gone through life with a chip on his shoulder. After a chance encounter with Crono, Magus found himself transported to the Middle Ages where his aptitude for magic encouraged him to make a mad grab for power. As with so many of the other villains on this list, the potential paradoxes of time travel (and his own obsession with the alien parasite Lavos) frustrated Magus' plans and led to further complications and, you guessed it, more time-traveling confusion.

Despite all that Magus has been through (not to mention all that he put Crono through), there's a chance to see a bit of a change of heart (or at least a lack of murdering). Having fought him on multiple occasions, the players are finally able to work side-by-side with him, but we're still not convinced that he's not looking for a chance to return to his villainous ways.
